TWO-CD ‘TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS ANTHOLOGY: THROUGH THE YEARS’
INCLUDES ALL THEIR HITS AND FAVORITES PLUS NEW TRACK “SURRENDER”;
DUE OUT OCTOBER 31
“These carefully chosen songs, classics and hidden-classics alike, are constant reminders of the way Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers can make you feel, on any given afternoon, when you’re craving something real, and one of these songs hits the radio. You can’t beat it. You can barely contain it on a couple discs. All you can do is crank it up, and take the ride.”
–Cameron Crowe, Liner Notes, 2000
October 31 will bring the release of Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Anthology: Through The Years on MCA/UTV Records, a division of Universal Music Enterprises. The two-CD set features 34 hits and favorites from 1976 to 1993 including “Surrender,” an unreleased PETTY-written concert favorite from 1977 that was just recorded in August 2000 specifically for this project. The package contains a deluxe booklet with newly written liner notes by Cameron Crowe.Anthology–with selections from each of the band’s first 11 original albums plus one from the Playback boxed set–comprises the most comprehensive “best of” assemblage ever released from the artist and group whose combination of commercial success and creative growth is among the most admired in rock ‘n’ roll.
Anthology steps far beyond 1993’s Top 10 and nine-times platinum Greatest Hits (17 hits from that album are included) while at the same time narrowing the focus from the six CDs of 1995’s gold Playback. Anthology features hits from 1976’s “Breakdown” to “Refugee,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Free Fallin'” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (the Top 10 duet with Stevie Nicks making its first-ever appearance on a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album) to 1993’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
From “Learning To Fly,” “American Girl” and “I Won’t Back Down” to “Runnin’ Down A Dream” and “Jammin’ Me” (co-penned by Bob Dylan), from classics such as “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Into The Great Wide Open” to the live “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star,” Anthology, with contributions also from George Harrison, Robbie Robertson, Jeff Lynne, Dave Stewart and The Bangles, collects the best from “the greatest and most consistent American band of the last 25 years,” says Crowe in the liner notes.
