As UNDERØATH prepare for the June 20 release of DEFINE THE GREAT LINE, the band is finding new and exciting ways to connect with their fans. As part of
an exclusive cross-platform launch with MTV2 that includes MTV.com, MTV
Overdrive, MTV Urge as well as MTV Mobile phone content, MTV2’s “The Leak” is now streaming the entire DEFINE THE GREAT LINE album at: www.mtv2.com/#leak/underoath. The surrealistic video for “Writing On The Walls”–the band’s first single, arriving at Modern Rock and Active Rock radio on June 27–can also now be viewed online at www.mtv2.com/#leak/underoath. The video—helmed by Popcore Films–has debuted via an all-day premiere on MTV2’s “Unleashed” and was added to Fuse as well.
In other TV news, UNDERØATH are the special guests for MTV2’s “T-Minus Rock” show airing all this week. Meanwhile, look for UNDERØATH to host MTV2’s “Headbangers Ball,” airing Saturday, June 17. The band will also guest host the official Vans Warped Tour kick-off episode on Fuse TV’s “Steven’s Untitled Rock Show” airing June 14th. Fans can also tune in to Fuse to catch the band’s special half-hour documentary titled “Making Of Define The Great Line,” beginning next week and airing five times during the week of June 19.
Meanwhile, Hot Topic has come on board with UNDERØATH after a successful chain-wide (675 stores in all 50 states) listening party last week that marked the first such event in the chain’s history. As part of the band’s partnership with Hot Topic, they’ll participate in a June 20th in-store signing in their hometown of Tampa, FL while in the midst of their summer trek as a headlining main stage act on the Vans Warped Tour from June 15-August 13. The Hot Topic affiliation also encompasses storewide programs such as chain-wide mallway signage, listening stations and front of store displays.
Crafted with the help of Atlanta-based producer/drummer Matt Goldman–who helped pour the rhythmic foundation–and Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, the genre-defying DEFINE THE GREAT LINE is a mind-blowing and cohesive album. While marking an artistically dark turn for the band, it remains undeniably accessible. DEFINE THE GREAT LINE marks the follow-up to their 350,000-selling indie smash They’re Only Chasing Safety, which has been on the Billboard new artist chart for 104 weeks—no other rock record currently on this chart has had a longer run than this.
DEFINE THE GREAT LINE has been receiving an array of early critical acclaim. Here’s a sample:
“Define sounds like a group therapy session put to tape; and with this lineup…artfully updating their early, brutal style with weird time changes, jarring electronic textures and post-metal ambience–the end result is transcendent. Call it focused aggression if you want; ‘vision’ works just as well…Define The Great Line is an album that transcends the idea of singles and deserves to be heard in sequence.”
–Aaron Burgess, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, July 2006 (CD Review, 5/5 Rating)
“Underoath’s legion of devoted fans won’t be surprised that the band may have delivered contemporary post-punk’s next landmark album with Define The Great Line.
–DX Ferris, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, July 2006 (Feature)
“…Underoath have become one of biggest bands in metalcore. More than any other Underoath record, Define The Great Line is shaped by the seamless musical interaction of the bandmates: the way the guitarists’ heavy riffing scrapes against Dudley’s electronic textures; the contrast between Chamberlain’s screaming and Gillespie’s singing; the steady pulse with which Brandell anchors sprawling compositions that regularly creep past the six- and seven-minute marks.”
–Mikael Wood, REVOLVER, August 2006 (Feature)
"Underoath is poised to take over the world with Define The Great Line, their latest offering of melodic brutality. Put simply, Underoath sounds like a band that has gotten serious. This disc not only succeeds and improves upon nearly every aspect of its predecessor, it outright demolishes it. It is angrier, heavier, tighter and dispenses an utterly overwhelming sense of urgency. All fans of heavy music should find tons to enjoy here, on what could be the best release of the year.”
–Nathan Pierce, OUTBURN, June-August 2006 (CD Review, 10/10 Rating)
