SURPASSES SALES OF 180,000 COPIES,
BAND SET TO KICK OFF U.K. TREK AFTER RECEIVING RAVE REVIEWS DURING HEADLINING SPRING U.S. TOUR;
VANS WARPED TOUR ON TAP FOR THIS SUMMER
“Infusing keyboard textures into their vicious but heart-breaking style which contrasts soothing and abrasive sections within songs, the band has gained instant affection among critics and scene fans alike.”
–JJ Koczan, AQUARIAN WEEKLY, (4/27/2005)
After building a rabid fan base as well as critical acclaim in the U.S. and abroad, UNDEROATH–who blend punk and metal with soaring experimental melodies, electronic textures and heartfelt lyricism–are set to kick off a U.K. trek as their current THEY’RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY album has now sold over 180,000 copies.
After wrapping a spring headlining U.S. tour, UNDEROATH shot a video for their second single “It’s A Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” in Hollywood with director Josh Graham (Neurosis’ A Sun That Never Sets [DVD], Dillinger Escape Plan’s “Unretrofied”). The performance-based video features the group rocking out in a surreal winter forest after a car crash.
After the U.K. leg, which includes a stop at the Download Festival June 10 in Donington Park, the Tampa, FL-based six-piece–SPENCER CHAMBERLAIN (vocals), TIM McTAGUE (guitar), GRANT BRANDELL (bass), AARON GILLESPIE (drums/vocals), CHRISTOPHER DUDLEY (keyboards) and JAMES SMITH (guitar)–will return to the Vans Warped Tour this summer, meanwhile compiling footage for a DVD (release TBA). UNDEROATH will then head to Canada for a tour with The Used throughout September before returning to the U.S. for a major North American trek throughout the Fall.
THEY’RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY is the follow-up to UNDEROATH’s 2002 release The Changing Of Times (Solid State Records), which went on to become the indie label’s top-seller with sales of over 70,000 of copies. Produced by James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever), the album–on which UNDEROATH’s infectious choruses raise metal-emo-core to the next level–debuted at #2 on Billboard magazine’s Heatseekers chart.
Here’s a sample of recent critical acclaim for UNDEROATH:
“The opener, ‘Young And Aspiring,’ is crushing, melodic and affecting all at once; ‘Reinventing Your Exit’ is so perfectly produced and executed it should scare the shit out of every single one of Underoath’s Warped Tour peers.”
–Jonah Bayer, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, August 2004 (CD review)
“On They’re Only Chasing Safety, Underoath prove that pop hooks are fine as long as the riffs are huge and the screaming never ends.”
–Amy Sciarretto, REVOLVER, August 2004
“They’re Only Chasing Safety finds Underoath experimenting with electronic textures, drum loops, and even a church choir.”
–Brandon Geist, REVOLVER, February 2005
“[Underoath]…bounced back, breakdowns, guitar hooks and positive vibes intact, with 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety, an audio rendering of triumph over adversity that pits new kid Spencer Chamberlain’s growl against drummer Aaron Gillespie’s yelp, exorcising the band’s personal demons from the previous two years.”
–Ryan Downey, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, March 2005
“The current lineup has honed its sound from its early, metallic leanings to a streamlined mix of punk, metal and emo that’s undeniably melodic and catchy.”
–Curtis Ross, THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, May 11, 2005
“Florida’s Underoath are true believers … [On They’re Only Chasing Safety,] they leavened their choked fury and twin-guitar Maiden voyages with uplifting melodies that are more alt-rock than emo.”
-Carly Carioli BOSTON PHOENIX, April 25, 2005
“Equal parts Taking Back Sunday and Lostprophets’ edge and melody with Norma Jean’s gruff bite.”
–Emily Kearns, ROCK SOUND (U.K.) July 2004, CD Review
“Underoath’s They’re Only Chasing Safety is not only the epitome of the new sound in music. It redefines the pop-hardcore sound, exploding with energy and passion for life, music and faith.”
–Andrew Martin, EMOTIONAL PUNK.COM June 2004, CD review
“It’s not the term of progression that is most impressive; it’s the speed of progression that makes this band all the buzz.”
–Andrew Duncan, CHORD, June/July 2004
“Underoath was the toast of the show, saluted by just about every other act that took the stage – because it was the Florida hard-core band's final performance of the tour. So the sextet turned in the most energetic set of the night. And its artfully sculpted noise was accompanied by enough head-thrashing to insure future chiropractic visits for all band members.”
–Kyle Munson, DES MOINES REGISTER, March 18, 2005
“The songs from They’re Only Chasing Safety, especially, which are really clean and polished on the record, come off much more raw and intense in a live environment, and gives the band an increased sense of urgency.”
–Severino Martinez, PUNK-IT.NET, May 2005
“Underoath undeniably stands out amongst many of their contemporaries who rely entirely too much on cliché and kitsch. Don’t be mistaken! Underoath is catchy and they definitely know how to write good hooks, but they avoid the whine and misery and stick a formula of intensity that is strengthened by their faith and positive outlook.”
–Shane Roeschlein, THEMUSICEDGE.COM, April 8, 2005
“Underoath’s chemistry is tight and impenetrable.”
–Amy Sciarretto, MEAN STREET, June 2004
“They’re Only Chasing Safety is an album that feels vital and urgent and in a time where there are a lot of acts coming out of nowhere with this style, it’s refreshing to hear a new album from a band that has been doing it right for awhile.”
–Therese McKeon, SHOUTWEB, June 2004
“Underoath is often cited for the melodious quality of its work, as well as its explorations of social and religious themes. Those differences make the band a standout among the modern post-hardcore outfits.”
–Linda East Brady, STANDARD-EXAMINER, April 14, 2005
“They’re better than 99 percent of what else is out there.”
–Jonah Bayer, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, August 2004
