For 16 years, URB Magazine has been committed to delivering an authentic and credible voice to the music and culture that simmers below the surface of mainstream media. URB looks at the world through the lens of music and reaches to the disparate genres of hip-hop, electronic and rock, connecting them in a single community. It is this passion for the sound of today and the love of yesterday’s roots that has made URB the longest running and most read underground music magazine in America. URB is proud to announce its 150th issue with its November/December 2007 edition on stands now.
Gracing the cover of the issue is Wale, an up-and-coming rapper from Washington DC, and France’s Justice, who have been causing a national stir with their sensational dance hit “D.A.N.C.E.” The choice of the two artists demonstrates the ultimate convergence of URB’s three worlds—underground rap, dance music and indie rock as a completely organic result of the current remix culture. Wale came to wide attention with his unauthorized remix of the song, which captured the attention of Justice and led him to a performance spot with Mark Ronson’s house band during this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Check out behind the scenes coverage of the cover shoot at: http://www.urb.com/features/390/JusticeandWalebehindthescenes.php.
The 150th issue is a front-to-back special edition featuring URB's ‘150 Things We Love,’ covering everything from Ameoba Records, Shepard Fairey and Rick Rubin to a special report on Southern California's Latino hip-hop community and Chicago's juke scene. Music, art, fashion, technology, food, health, drugs, games, toys, cars–and even porn—are covered. To celebrate the theme of the issue, URB is planning several major events.
On November 4, 2007, URB will host a giant 150th issue blowout with Peaches and Tone Loc along with special guest Tigarah with a free event at Avalon in Hollywood, CA in conjunction with Delicious Vinyl and Going.com. A party in New York City will follow on November 8 with Mr. Flash, Lacrate & Samir plus a live performance from Masta Ace. A VIP holiday party featuring Wale and Mark Ronson is currently being finalized for December. The festivities will close out in Los Angeles during the URB-sponsored massive HARD New Years Eve event happening in downtown with Justice, Peaches, Steve Aoki, A-Track, Klaxons (DJ Set), Whitey, Uberzone, Jason Bentley and more.
In other news, URB was the recipient of several major accolades in the publishing world this year. The magazine won the Folio Award Gold Medal for ‘Best Single Article’ for the “How The West Was Won” cover story about Coachella written by Richard Thomas and the Bronze Metal for ‘Best Cover’ for their June 2007 cover of M.I.A. photographed by Nick Ballon and designed by Evan Deterling. The magazine also garnered the Maggie Award for the ‘Best Music/Consumer’ publication and URB photographers Tom Fowlkes and Robert Yager have been honored with American Photography Awards for photos shot for the publication this year. Finally, a profile on rapper Lil Wayne by URB Senior Editor Brandon Perkins was included in the prestigious Da Capos Best Music Writing 2007 Anthology following it’s publication in URB’s December 2006 issue.
