Heading into its eighth year, the VANS WARPED TOUR '02 will kick off June 21 in Boise, ID and wrap August 18 in Detroit, MI. This year, WARPED has expanded to 47 cities in North America and returns to its punk rock roots while continuing to incorporate expanded youth culture lifestyle booths and extreme sports athletes into the touring festival.
This year's line-up features VANS WARPED TOUR veterans Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, Good Charlotte, Lagwagon, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, MXPX, New Found Glory, No Use for a Name, NOFX and Reel Big Fish, as well as up-and-comers Alkaline Trio, Causualities, Morgan Heritage, Ozma, Quarashi, Something Corporate, The Used, Thrice and Thursday. While attendance continues to grow–over 460,000 fans attended the tour last year–ticket prices remain low. Tickets for this year's tour are around $25.00, the same price as last year. In addition, for a limited time fans can purchase discounted tickets via www.warpedtour.com before on-sale dates.
"When putting the bill together, I started looking at it like comfort food," says tour organizer Kevin Lyman. "It's like the comfort WARPED; it's all the bands that you've really grown to love on the WARPED TOUR. They're all part of it this year and you know they're going to put on a great live show. At the same time, we've added some great new groups. As always, the minute the doors open, the show goes off, but this year I don't think you want to miss a minute of it." The WARPED TOUR team is proud to have such hotly-tipped artists such as Thursday, Quarashi, The Used and Thrice on this year's line-up.
Returning attractions to this year's tour this year include the "Reverse Day Care," where fans can leave their parents while they go and enjoy the show and "Warped Are They Now?"–a traveling museum of VANS WARPED TOUR memorabilia including photos, old tour posters and merchandise. A new addition to the tour this year is the "Pirate Zone," a water-themed area that includes a giant slip-n-slide, misting tent and a chance to dunk the musicians or athletes on the tour in a dunk tank. "Last year was the hottest one in the history of the tour so we're bringing out a whole slip-n-slide area out to try and keep the kids cooler," says Lyman.
"We're really trying to take the WARPED TOUR back to the fans," says Lyman. The kids realize they still have a lot to say about what goes on. A lot of them are doing things on the tour this year. There's a kid who created a bag check because he visualized that fans need a place to store their stuff while at the show."
A special addition to this year's tour will be a WARPED TOUR memorabilia book which will enable fans to tap into the history of the tour. The book will feature road stories from bands and tour staff, as well as behind-the-scenes photos and other memorabilia collected during the past seven years. The book will only be available at WARPED TOUR shows.
As in the past, the VANS WARPED TOUR '02 will feature extreme sports demonstrations by pros such as skaters Steve Cabellaro, Mike Frazier, Neal Hendrix, Ruda Lopes, roller skater Brian Wainwright, BMXers Rick Thorne, Dave Romwell, Mike Mancuso, Mountain Bikers Daniel Drain, Aaron Lutze and Moto X riders Beau Manley, Shawn Highland, Ryan Hanson and others.
Highlights of this year's VANS WARPED TOUR '02 include:
Reverse Daycare: A tented, air-conditioned area where kids can drop off their parents while they cruise the action of the festival. Parents will be able to get away from the heat and noise, enjoy cold drinks and discuss the triumphs of parenthood as their kids rock out to the music and activities.
The Pirate Zone: A water-themed area that will have fun interactive activities for concert-goers, including a giant slip 'n slide, waterized bungee jump, misting tent, dunk tank with your favorite musician or athlete, super soaker competitions and more.
Vans Warped Tour Treasure Hunt: Audience participants will have the opportunity to pick up a Warped Treasure Hunt map at a sponsor booth where they'll be encouraged to collect scavenger hunt items throughout the day, competing with others to win prizes.
Warped Are They Now?: A traveling museum of Vans Warped Tour memorabilia, including band and athlete photographs, tour posters, vintage merchandise, and live appearances by current touring bands.
Fanzine Region: This area will be dedicated to the numerous fanzines that have supported the tour throughout the years and dedicated their time to VWT bands. Fanzine producers will have the chance to exhibit their fanzine in their local city, while providing tour participants samples and giveaways, information on subscriptions, contacts, where to buy or pick up the zine and zine history. This area will have a database with all participating fanzines. They will be able to conduct band and athlete interviews at the booth for future issues.
Locker Check-In: An avid warped tour fan arranged this much-needed VWT Locker Check-In area. It will allow concert-goers the chance to collect items and buy merchandise and when it's too much to carry, check it in! Coats, backpacks, bags, shirts, hats, pants and shoes are all welcome.
Button Booth: Two WARPED fans will be on hand making buttons for the crowd.
Troma Films: The infamous Troma Films (Toxic Avenger, etc) will be on tour showing films in character and causing havoc. Check out www.troma.com for more info.
Ernie Ball Stage: In its sixth year, the Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands offers bands from across the country an opportunity to compete for various prizes such as: spots on the Ernie Ball stage at the Vans Warped Tour, gear and instruments, as well as recording contracts.
Drive-Thru Records Stage: This will be the first year of the Drive-Thru stage which will feature this fast-rising independent label's finest acts. Movielife, Finch, The Starting Line, Home Grown, Allister and Rx Bandits will be featured along with surprise performances by other Drive-Thru bands in select markets. There will also be a Drive-Thru lounge near the stage where the bands will be signing autographs and hanging out with fans pre- and post-set.
Extreme Drumming: WFD Extreme Sport Drumming, a World X-Sport Drumming Event, who's mission is to find the world's fastest drummer will be a featured event at the 2002 WARPED TOUR. WFD will be an interactive event where the tour's drummers will set daily bench-mark runs (scores) and the crowd as well as area speed drummers will have the opportunity to beat their favorite WARPED TOUR drummer. WFD will track the contestants of all dates and the fastest drummer–whether spectator or X-Treme Drummer–will win grand prizes including a MAPEX drum set, their name on Promark sticks, an Axis double pedal, Remo heads and much more.
Sub City: Sub City was created two years ago by Hopeless Records to raise funding and awareness for non-profit organizations. They've had 21 releases from four bands, including Thrice, who will appear on the tour from June 21-30. Sub City will have a booth at each tour date which will provide information about organizations such as: A Place Called Home (providing a family environment for at risk youth), National Hopeline Network (a suicide hotline and support network), Crittenton Services (helping abused children), Art City (non-profit art center for families of Aboriginal decent), The Tooth Fairy Project and others.
