ENDS 2013
WITH TWO SPECIAL EVENTS:
THE LA PHILHARMONIC’S SPECIAL GREEN UMBRELLA PROGRAM PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
200 MOTELS BY L.A.’S GROUNDBREAKING ICONOCLAST COMPOSER FRANK ZAPPA
ATWALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23
THREE “ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA” DECEMBER SHOWS COMMEMORATING THE THREE DATES FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS PERFORMED
THERE 40 YEARS AGO.
The ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST will close out 2013 with a series of events honoring legendary composer Frank Zappa. This will also mark the beginning of the ZFT’s own Year of Zappa from December 4, 2013 to December, 21 2014, details of which will be revealed in the coming months.
The year will end with events celebrating the 40th anniversary of Frank Zappa’s acclaimed Roxy & Elsewhere release, along with a newly minted original vinyl release. The legendary December 1973 shows at the Roxy in Los Angeles were also filmed for a never before seen Live at the Roxy concert movie. In addition, Dweezil Zappa will perform three “Zappa Plays Zappa” shows–December 7, 8 and 9–commemorating the three dates (December 8, 9 and 10, 1973) Frank Zappa and the Mothers performed there 40 years ago. A lucky winner will also receive the Zappa Roxy Guitar by Gibson!
In addition, tonight (Wednesday, October 23, 2013) the L.A. Philharmonic will mark the 10th anniversary date of the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall with a special Green Umbrella program presenting the world premiere of 200 Motels by L.A.’s groundbreaking iconoclast composer Frank Zappa. Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the LA Phil, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. L.A.-based director, designer and visual artist James Darrah, created a spectacular setting for the Work and the performers. Also joining Salonen and the LA Phil are renowned soloists and characters known from the film and a band that includes Ian Underwood of Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention, Scott Thunes, who also played with Frank Zappa, Zappa Family Trust Vaultmeister Joe Travers, and Jamie Kime, formerly of Zappa Plays Zappa. In 1970, Frank Zappa collaborated with Zubin Mehta and the LA Phil for a revolutionary concert that formed the basis of this masterwork. The performance will be the first complete realization of Zappa’s musical vision as he expressed on paper. This once-in-a-lifetime concert celebrates the spirit of freedom that opening the doors at the Walt Disney Concert Hall brings and will be a uniquely California event.
