LOS ANGELES TRIO TO RELEASE FIVE-SONG ‘SELECTIONS’ EP NOVEMBER 7
BEFORE FULL-LENGTH ALBUM DEBUTS IN EARLY 2007;
NATIONAL ‘DEATH & TAXES TOUR’ STARTS NOVEMBER 3
Los Angeles rock trio ACUTE–who conjure a wide range of moods inspired by such artists as Grandaddy, Magnetic Fields, the Beach Boys, composer Ennio Morricone and even film director Federico Fellini–will release their debut EP SELECTIONS November 7 on Help Records. Produced by Dave Trumfio (Wilco, OKGO, My Morning Jacket), the five-song collection will be supported by the five-week Death & Taxes tour, which gets underway November 3 at Rockettown in Nashville and teams ACUTE with contemporaries Copeland, The Appleseed Cast and Owen. SELECTIONS will be followed in early 2007 by ACUTE’s full-length album ARMS AROUND A STRANGER.
The EP’s single “Follow You Home” is a tale of vengeance fueled by a fuzzed-out electric guitar. “It’s probably the most violent I’ve ever felt in my life,” says vocalist/guitarist ISAAC LEKACH. “You could say it’s a relationship song, but I’m singing to somebody who took my girl away.” ACUTE recently filmed a video for the song in Los Angeles using stop motion special effects during the band’s performance.
The members of ACUTE each bring different musical experiences to the band: ISAAC was a college DJ in Miami, drummer PATRICK EDWARDS played in Ozma and bassist COLT MALONEY is also a member of Whispertown 2000. ISAAC says, “Everything we’ve been through sort of puts you in the right frame of mind so you know what to do and what not to do. It’s kind of like when you’re dating someone and figure out what the right and wrong things to do are. If you mess up, then you know next time around you won’t do that again.” Continuing, he adds, “Maybe it’s just luck that we all get along so well or maybe it’s up to that experience that we’ve all played with other people and know where the lines are.”
The band’s diversity enlivens SELECTIONS. While the string-embellished “Saint” strolls with slow, South Western grace, “Take A Step Back” rallies around riveting drums beats and urgent bass lines to convey a cautionary tale. ISAAC says producer Dave Trumfio “understood what we were going for and he definitely helped us achieve it. He just made us sound like a better version of ourselves.”
