ALANIS MORISSETTE
TO RELEASE “MTV UNPLUGGED” COMPANION CD
NOVEMBER 23 ON MAVERICK RECORDING CO;
DISC FEATURES THREE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SONGS
Following the November 1 debut of her MTV Unplugged special, ALANIS MORISSETTE will release the companion CD Tuesday, November 23 on Maverick Recording Co. Produced by the singer, songwriter and musician, the MTV Unplugged disc features 12 tracks, including three songs not seen on the TV special. Recorded and filmed at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music, the album is also highlighted by three previously unreleased songs: “No Pressure Over Cappuccino” (which fans first heard live on the jagged little pill tour) as well as two songs written for but not included on the critically acclaimed seven million-selling Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album: “These R The Thoughts” and “Princes Familiar.” Lyrics to these three songs can be found at www.alanismorissette.com.
The album is also highlighted by an acoustic version of the song ALANIS wrote for the City Of Angels soundtrack, “Uninvited,” which earned her two of her seven Grammy Awards (Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song) as well as her interpretation of The Police classic “King Of Pain.” Throughout the album, ALANIS (vocals, guitar, harmonica, flute) is joined by her band: Chris Chaney (bass), Nick Lashley (guitar), drummer Gary Novak, guitarist Joel Shearer and keyboardist Deron Johnson. Strings were arranged by David Campbell, except for “You Oughta Know,” arranged by Suzie Katayama. Joining Novak on percussion is Brad Dutz.
The first radio track from MTV Unplugged is “That I Would Be Good,” the studio version (from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) of which is being serviced simultaneously to radio stations.
In a review of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Bruce Westbrook of the Houston Chronicle wrote about the song: “`That I Would Be Good’ is an exquisitely lovely song of tender yet fervent self-acceptance in the face of human frailty. For Morissette’s young fans, it’s a beacon of spiritual calm, and her beautifully belted voice becomes a voice of reason. That’s not to say she wants to be the voice of a generation. Morissette does well enough just being the voice of herself.” Meanwhile, the studio version of “That I Would Be Good” will be featured in November on the WB network’s “Dawson’s Creek,” in promo spots for that network’s “Felicity,” and on assorted station promos for its new fall lineup.
Meantime, lots of Internet excitement is surrounding the release of the MTV Unplugged album. As of October 19, Maverick offered a full-length streaming audio preview of ALANIS‘ song “Uninvited” to online retail, music, lifestyle, and radio station websites. Maverick partnered with most of the major download technologies, including Liquid Audio, Microsoft Windows Media Technologies, and Real Player. In addition, “Thank U”–another track from the MTV Unplugged session but not included on the CD–was made available as a full-length, secure download exclusively to fans who either pre-order the MTV Unplugged album or purchase ALANIS Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie or jagged little pill CDs, or the jagged little pill, Live home video online.
Maverick plans to make additional exclusive tracks available to major retail chains, involving them in unique campaigns that will marry digital downloads with in-store retail promotions. These exclusive tracks, which will not time out, will be offered as a free secure download with purchase, and will be available via the individual retailer’s Internet site, and on Maverick’s site (www.maverickrc.com).
To further support the MTV Unplugged release, Maverick offered a completely original promotion–Video Custom Disc–a chance for fans to make their own custom ALANIS video disc. Via the Tower Records Internet site (www.towerrecords.com), ALANIS‘ personal Internet site (www.alanismorissette.com), and Maverick’s site, the consumer can purchase four or five of ALANIS‘ classic promotional music videos on a
