ALANIS MORISSETTE took home the “Best Director” honor at Canada’s MuchMusic Video Awards for her work on “Unsent,” a probing look at past relationships that marked the second release from her SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE album, which has sold over seven million copies worldwide. This is the third video ALANIS has solely directed in her career (she did the same honors for “So Pure” and “Joining You” from the latest album). For “Unsent,” ALANIS directed, scripted the dialog–which is expressed in sub-titles that run throughout the video–and cast the actors as well. This directorial honor follows the Grammy Award she took home in 1998 for “Best Video – Long Form” for her jagged little pill, Live! home video, which she co-directed with Steve Purcell.
Having just wrapped her “5-1/2 Weeks” tour with Tori Amos, ALANIS has headed overseas for dates in Australia, New Zealand, the Far East and South America through November 25.
Meanwhile, fans should stay tuned for news of the airdate of her MTV “Unplugged” special, which was recently taped in New York. The “Unplugged” album (Maverick Recording Co.) is due in stores November 16 and will contain ALANISfavorites alongside several unreleased songs she performed at the taping.
In the midst of all this, MORISSETTE will make her big screen debut–she’s playing God in director Kevin Smith’s film, “Dogma,” out in mid-November.
“Kevin’s a friend of mine–he’s really brilliant, a true artist,” ALANIS recently told G. Brown at the Denver Post. “I did some acting when I was younger, and he asked me to take part in the movie right after I got off the road for JAGGED LITTLE PILL. But I didn’t think I’d be of any value to him because I was so burnt out. A year later, he’d just finished casting the movie and there was one role left, a cameo of God. I said I’d love to do it. It’s very funny and sweet. His belief, as is mine, is that God is us. So it wasn’t so much that I had to play a woman sitting in the clouds with my hair flying. It was more being real.”
ALANIS has also written and recorded the song “Still” for “Dogma,” which will be heard over the closing credits and is featured on the forthcoming soundtrack album, set for a November 2 release on Maverick Recording Co.
