ALIEN ANT FARM will join 311 for eight shows this month, in the midst of their own in-progress national headlining club and theatre tour. The leg of dates with 311 begins October 23 at the Austin Music Hall in Austin, Texas and culminates with a special Halloween performance at Los Angeles’ Universal Amphitheatre. Earlier that day, AAF will perform their #1 Modern Rock single “Smooth Criminal” on The Tonight Show (rescheduled from September 17, due to the recent world events). In addition, the band have taped a special performance of the song for MADtv, set to air Saturday, October 13.
In other news, ALIEN ANT FARM—DRYDEN MITCHELL (vocals), TERRY CORSO (guitar), TYE ZAMORA (bass) and MIKE COSGROVE (drums)–recently took time out to shoot a video for their forthcoming single “Movies” with director Marc Klasfeld, who also lensed the group’s MTV TRL Top 5 “Smooth Criminal” video. Filmed October 6 and 7 in Los Angeles, the clip portrays the band in spoofs of various pop culture films. Due to overwhelming demand from radio stations nationwide, the band will re-release “Movies”–which was the first radio track off ANThology–early next month as the next single from their platinum-certified New Noize/DreamWorks Records debut.
In a review of ANThology in the Boston Phoenix, Sean Richardson called “Movies”: “…an upbeat break-up song that sets the mood with [Dryden’s] cutting vocals and personal approach on songwriting” (March 2, 2001). Elsewhere, writer Jill Pesselnick noted in Billboard: “Alien Ant Farm’s blend of intelligence and humor comes across in ‘Movies'” (March 3, 2001).
ANThology continues to have a strong presence on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, currently at #28 after 30 weeks. At the same time, “Smooth Criminal” remains in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and Top 20 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
