Since 1985, ALTERNATIVE PRESS a.k.a. AP has been an important independent voice for music fans looking for more than the commercial option. What started out as a local fanzine 25 years ago has developed into an internationally distributed magazine covering the contemporary punk scene. The artists appearing in the gallery exhibit reflect the diversity that has appeared in the pages of ALTERNATIVE PRESS in the last quarter-century.
The Los Angeles art show will open on Friday, July 9 from 7:30pm-11:00pm (VIP party and opening reception) with a public opening reception on Saturday, July 10, from 8:00-11:00pm at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery (170 S. La Brea, Los Angeles, CA 90036). The entire exhibition will be on view at the gallery from July 9–July 23, 2010. A New York art show is planned for October–stay tuned for more information.
About Alternative Press magazine:
ALTERNATIVE PRESS was started 25 years ago with the goal of being the definitive source for the underground music scene. From its early days as a four-page fold-over fanzine distributed at punk-rock shows, to the ambitious production values and international distribution it enjoys today, ALTERNATIVE PRESS has been consistently on the forefront of breaking new artists. Beyond the magazine, AP has successfully expanded its brand through The AP Tour, Altpress.com, programs for national music tours, retail music guides and more. AP continues to offer fans insight into the latest trends and the hottest bands first.
The Merry Karnoswky Gallery is home to several of the most significant artists working today. Founded in 1997 by Merry Karnowsky, the gallery has had a central focus for over a decade; championing emerging mid-career artists who push beyond the boundaries of formal definition. The gallery is devoted to exhibiting contemporary works of art that are challenging, innovative and committed to fostering new directions in American art. With a creative stable that is one of the most significantly sought after both nationally and internationally, the gallery has become one of Los Angeles’ premiere insurrectionist art venues. http://www.mkgallery.com
