CRITICS REACT TO COACHELLA DEBUT
AND THE DUO’S RETURN TO COUTERPOINT
BIG GIGANTIC know how to make an impression in a festival setting. Last month, they kicked off this year’s festival run with their debut at Coachella—two stellar performances where they were joined by the Shadow Hills High School Marching Band from Indio, CA—along with their return to the CounterPoint Music & Arts Festival in Georgia to critical praise.
Now the Colorado-based duo of saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken has announced they will team up with their friend Skrillex to be a part of and act as Musical Director of his Superjam at Bonnaroo. Starting Saturday night (6/14) at midnight, other artists on tap for the full out extravaganza include Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Robby Krieger, Zedd, Mickey Hart, Janelle Monae, Warpaint, Chance The Rapper, Thundercat and more.
Other festival appearances on the horizon for BIG GIGANTIC include Mysteryland, Spring Awakening, Firefly Music Festival, The Hudson Project, The Peach Music Festival and Summer Set Music & Camping Festival along with numerous dates at the Mad Decent Block Party plus their own annual headlining event ROWDYTOWN, taking place at Red Rocks Amphitheatre this September 26 and 27.
BIG GIGANTIC released their new album THE NIGHT IS YOUNG on February 11 for free via their website www.biggigantic.net, which already has over 70,000 downloads to date. The album debuted at #10 on the Dance/Electronic Album and #18 on the Heatseekers Album Billboard charts respectively as well as #2 on the iTunes Electronic chart upon its release. An electric mix of tracks that span genres from electronic and dance to hip hop and electro soul, the 8-song album—their fifth overall—includes “Touch The Sky,” a blazing instrumental that made its debut in late 2013 to critical acclaim throughout the blogosphere, as well as the crushing dubstep song “Lets Go!,” the dazzling sax-hooked track “Just For The Thrill” and velvety number “Shooting Stars.” The album also features the title track and party anthem “The Night Is Young” featuring vocals from their friends Cherub (Jordan Kelly and Jason Huber). The song’s video—which debuted via RollingStone.com–can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEfBv4POfik&feature=youtu.be
Here is what the tastemakers had to say about BIG GIGANTIC’s performances at Coachella and CounterPoint:
“Sax player/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken have a next-level stage show too, but the duo pulled off something special for their bangin’ set in the Sahara Tent. The Colorado-based group invited 34 members of Indio’s Shadow Hills High School Marching Band to join in, and it felt pretty special.”
–Kevin Bronson, BUZZBANDS LA 4/15/14 (from Coachella)
“Both Dominic Lalli (Sax / DJ) and Jeremy Salken (Drums) performed their signature blend of live instrument powered electronic music to the festival setting like they do best. From the Sax solos to Dom amping the crowd up, the energy was not in short supply.”
– Nick, THIS SONG IS SICK 4/14/14 (from Coachella)
“Despite all the high-profile surprises, Big Gigantic brought out the most remarkable guest performers when the Indian Wells High School Marching Band emerged for a rendition of Aloe Blacc’s ‘I Need a Dollar’.”
–Jemayel Khawaja, STEREOTUDE 4/14/14 (from Coachella)
“Bringing saxophone and live drums to the stage, the guys delivered a beat-blizzard EDM showcase in the Sahara Tent that’s guaranteed to elicit return invites from promoters – and that was before they brought out a 30-piece marching band.”
– Johnny Firecloud, CRAVE ONLINE 4/15/14 (from Coachella)
“What a fun set! Even “Escape Velocity,” the Coachella moon man, came to check out the beats mixed with saxophone player and producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken. It was chock full of goodness from new album The Night is Young.”
– Vanessa Franko, PRESS ENTERPRISE 4/21/14 (from Coachella)
“While the Sahara tent hosted plenty of house-centric DJ sets throughout the weekend, Big Gigantic provided one of the more unique performances with their beautiful brand of Colorado bass music. Bringing plenty of jazz-infused dubstep and glitch hob to the table, Dominic and Jeremy’s performance was capped off most notably by the inclusion of the 34-piece local high school marching band.”
– Michael Sundius, DANCING ASTRONAUT 4/21/14 (from Coachella)
“One of the more inspiring moments of both weekends came Saturday evening. Still riding high from their release The Night is Young, Big Gigantic took to the Sahara Tent where they performed a remix of Aloe Blacc’s “I Need a Dollar” and a remix of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” with Indio’s Shadow Hills High 34-piece marching band. You could tell how excited the kids were standing on the stages of Coachella, a feat they accomplished only in their teens. Even a heartless tin man would’ve been warmed by the performance.”
– Brittany Gaston, BEATPORT NEWS 4/24/14 (from Coachella)
“Currently on tour promoting their new (free) LP, The Night is Young, Big Gigantic wear their musical heart on their sleeves, sporting a name that immediately fills in the audience as to what to expect. Big and Gigantic accurately describe both the sights and sounds the duo of Dominic Lalli (saxophone/producer) and Jeremy Salken (drums) trade in. From their monolithic stage front to the beats that fill the sky to their individual talent on their given instruments, Big Gigantic went all out because that’s all they know to do.”
– Angel J Melendez, FUZZY HEADPHONES 4/26/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big G feel like local heroes at this point. Their ATL shows are legendary and last night did not disappoint.”
–Kurt K, CBS LOCAL ATLANTA 4/26/14 (from CounterPoint)
“The Denver duo threw down heavy bass accompanied by jazzy saxophone riffs, and the heady crowd ate up their remixes of Adventure Club’s ‘Do I See Color’ and Macklemore’s ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’.”
–Chris Caruso, DJ TIMES, 5/1/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Friday highlights included Big Gigantic, who have continuously refused to be boxed in by genre and roped in audience members of every variety thanks to the innovative blend of Dominic Lalli’s cool saxophone against the pulsing, electronic background.”
–Dacey Orr, PASTE MAGAZINE, 4/28/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big Gigantic went on to rock the main stage and set the bar high for all of the bands and DJs to follow. It was certainly one of the best shows of the weekend; the crowd was energetic and dancing for the entire set.”
– Liz Turcotte, RSVP ATL 4/26/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big Gigantic is always a pleasurable experience, but Big G at CP was mind blowing. Not a calm face in the house after their sunset show on opening day.”
–Jen McKinnon, FLORIDA MUSIC BLOG 5/5/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big Gigantic performed just as the sun was beginning to set and took the party to the next level. With a wild set that included tracks from their most recent album The Night is Young, Big G also mixed in some of their classics like their I Need A Dollar remix. They also seemingly experimented with a couple higher bpm songs which was a nice change of pace. This fusion of past and present was an amazing way to begin an insane night.”
– Miguel Jinglesby, EDM SAUCE 5/6/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big Gigantic was the first main-stage band that really felt like the rest of the lineup, and they did not disappoint. They lived up to their name as their sound, their stage setup, and their entire set were big and gigantic.”
– Matt Wallin, PLAY BACK STL 5/5/14 (from CounterPoint)
“it was time for one of the most highly anticipated acts of the weekend to hit the stage. Big Gigantic threw down one of the heaviest sets I’ve ever seen the twosome perform. As the air filled with the soulful melodies of the talented Mr. Dominic Lalli, the crowd at the Blu Freedom Stage was thumped with hit after hit as the sun set behind the rolling green hills of Rome, Georgia. Some of their biggest highlights were “Fantastic,“ “It’s Going Down,” and of course their amazing remix of Aloe Blacc’s “I Need A Dollar,” but I have to say, the crowd went especially crazy for the duo’s latest collaboration with Cherub on the funky title track of their newest EP, “The Night Is Young.”
–Jabari Kefele, SENSIBLE REASON, 5/5/14 (from CounterPoint)
“Big Gigantic got groovy in true Big G style. Dominic Lalli blazed away on the saxophone with Jeremy Salken slaying away at the percussion creating rhythm that shook the cellular composition of the thousands of people flailing around to old school favorites; From the 2012 EP ‘Nocturnal’ to the freshiest of the fresh from their latest ‘Touch the Sky.’”
