BLUE MAN GROUP ANNOUNCES
SUMMER CONCERT TOUR DATES
AS SPRING SHOWS ARE SOLD OUT
With the first leg of their full-production U.S. headlining concert tour sold out, BLUE MAN GROUP is upping the ante by announcing a second leg of summer dates that will visit primarily amphitheaters in 34 cities in support of their newly released album THE COMPLEX (Lava Records). Tickets for the Clear Channel Entertainment tour go on sale the week of May 19, though the actual on sale date varies by market. Please check local listings. Updated information can be found on blueman.com and cc.com. Additional cities will be announced on these web sites as added.
Promising to deliver an entirely new, over-the-top audio/visual event, BLUE MAN GROUP’s trek–certain to raise the bar on state-of-the-art concert technology–will combine elements of rave culture and rock in a way they’ve never been seen before. The spring and summer tours will feature opening sets by Tracy Bonham and Venus Hum, both of whom will join BLUE MAN GROUP onstage for their performance. Matt Goldman, Blue Man Group co-founder said, “We’re thrilled that Tracy would make the time to tour with us and lend her amazing vocals as she explores the next stage of her musical career. She blows us away every time she starts singing.”
BLUE MAN GROUP unveiled their new concert production when they performed both nights at the fourth annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. In his review, Tim Ball of The San Jose Mercury News (5/5/03) wrote: “If you’ve been dying to partake of the multimedia, drum-based spectacle that is the Blue Man Group, your time has come. With Tracy Bonham to lend her wondrous vocals to the show, a huge video screen behind the band, and, yes, those Blue Men, plus a light- and special-effects show to rival any other, these guys are the real deal.”
Elsewhere, Alec Hanley Bemis of LA Weekly (5/2/03) noted: “Blue Man Group’s 10 p.m. set at the Outdoor Theater parodied arena rock traditions with overblown lighting, special effects and even a multimedia tutorial in ‘rock concert movements.’ It was oddly satisfying to watch tens of thousands simultaneously trying to perfect #1) the head bob, #2) the one-armed fist pump and #3) the up-and-down jumping motion.”
Meanwhile, THE COMPLEX–“an artful, often playful collection” (Gene Stout, Seattle Post-Intelligencer (4/22/03)–debuted on the Billboard charts, tripling opening sales of their 1999 gold-certified album “Audio.”
In other news, BLUE MAN GROUP will contribute the album’s song “The Current,” with vocals by Gavin Rossdale, to “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” for which they recently shot a music video. In addition to Rossdale, their first, full-fledged rock album features guest appearances by Dave Matthews, Tracy Bonham, Venus Hum, Esthero and Josh Haden, among others.
In his four-star album review, Ryan Lenz of Associated Press (4/22/03) wrote: “The Blue Man Group has in ‘The Complex’ an album true to rock’s simple rule for commercial three-minute ditty success, no matter if its sound comes mostly from plastic pipe instead of guitars…peppered within are quality covers such as Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ and Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit,’ drum-heavy, hard rock originals such as ‘Persona,’ and quirky songs such as ‘Time to Start,’ a spoof on the audience at a rock show…The Complex stands apart from the stage. It’s music for music’s sake.”
