HE CAME, HE CONQUERED: DAVID BOWIE followed his surprise Los Angeles club gig last week with four triumphant California shows–September 12-13 at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheatre and September 15-16 at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre–which brought out an eclectic array of celebs. On hand in Los Angeles: Johnny Depp, Jimmy Smits, David Spade, Terry Gilliam, Daryl Hannah, Naomi Campbell, Nastassja Kinski, singer Robyn, Daphne Zuniga, Red Hot Chili Pepper Anthony Kiedis, Slash, and members of Alice In Chains, Tool and The Nails, while the San Francisco contingent included Neil Young, Sean Penn, Chris Isaak and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Fans on Saturday night in Los Angeles were treated to an expanded set which included a positively eerie performance of the Earthling track "Dead Man Walking"–not in its original state, but the deconstructed Moby-remix version–as well as the haunting "V2 Schneider" from Heroes and "Always Crashing In The Same Car" from Low. Other highlights included the throbbing "I'm Afraid Of Americans," the BOWIE/Brian Eno-penned Earthling song which will soon be released as a single by Virgin. Stay tuned for very special details about the release of the song. Meanwhile, BOWIE is set to perform October 15 at New York's Radio City Music Hall–a full-length set immediately following the GQ "Man Of The Year" awards.
