BOWIE RELAUNCHES
BOWIEART.COM,
EXPOSING YOUNG ARTISTS ONLINE
David Bowie is up to his magical net tricks again with the re-launch of Bowieart.com. Launched in 1997 by Bowie and his dealer friend Kate Chertavian, the site was among the first art sites online.
After three years of financial and critical success, Bowie and Chertavian decided to work their charm on young blood. Bemoaning the lack of fresh talent online, Bowieart became excited about the possibility of exhibiting the best young artists in Britain alongside their successful colleagues.
What will sure to become considered a revolutionary and confrontational move in art world circles, Bowieart takes absolutely no commission from any sales made through its site. The usual practice among galleries is to deduct as much as 50% from the artist's purse on any sale of an artwork.
Bowieart's embrace of young blood is a fine example of Bowie's commitment to the arts. Currently 400 new works are on view, including the 2000 graduating students of the Royal College of Art and the artists run initiative, Assembly (ex RC and Goldsmith students). Bowieart is also thrilled to be introducing the New York Academy of Arts to the site in the very near future, with four more colleges both British and American to be announced before the end of the year. With all this talent in a non-commercial space, Bowieart allows the net's art enthusiasts direct access (both on and off line) to the talents of young artists. It will also include your new David Bowie print that is downloadable free from the site and prints by a selection of the graduate artists.
The re-launch of Bowieart is not surprising to those who know Bowie the arts enthusiast. Whether as an artist, collector, writer or patron, his involvement with Modern Painters, 21 Publishing and the ICA are just a few illustrations to of his dedication to furthering the cause of talent in the UK.
Once again Bowie produces a winner. Bowieart successfully cuts out the middleman, giving direct access to fresh talent. A refreshing reminder of how the net can be used to provide information and exposure to talented artists at the most important time in their careers.
Watch Bowieart in the coming months as more international Arts Institutions exhibit their students online. Bowieart.com is destined to become THE online resource site for fresh young artists, opinions and reviews.
