THIS JUST IN: DAVID BOWIE was just nominated for a Brit Award (the U.K. equivalent of the Grammy) in the category of "Best Male" along with Sting, Ian Brown (Stone Roses), Tom Jones and Van Morrison. The Brit Awards take place in London on March 3 (U.S. airdate TBA). At the same time, BOWIE, on the strength of his critically acclaimed hours… album on Virgin–which was in the Top Five in most European countries–continues to earn more praise. Germany's Rolling Stone voted BOWIE "Solo Artist Of The Year." He was also named "Artist Of The Year" in the 1999 Readers' Poll of France's leading monthly music magazine Rock & Folk. He topped a competitive list which included such artists as Beck, Ben Harper and Iggy Pop. BOWIE also made his presence known in the Top Five of several categories, including: "Album Of The Year," "Video Of The Year ('Thursday's Child')," "Album Sleeve Of The Year" and "Single Of The Year (Placebo/BOWIE, 'Without You, I'm Nothing')." Elsewhere, BOWIE was voted the "Number One Artist Of All Time" by the readers of the U.K. newspaper The Sun.
