DEAD ROCK WEST–the California vocal duo of Cindy Wasserman andFrank Lee Drennen–have been invited to open another 10 shows for legendary American punk pioneers X, beginning Friday, August 28 in Milwaukee, WI and wrapping Friday, September 11 in Annapolis, MD. The duo recently completed a run of 12 dates with X, July 17-August 3, which included three shows in New York City.
Additionally, DEAD ROCK WEST have landed another coveted support slot; just a few days after ending with X, they’ll open for Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin and The Guilty Ones (comprised of Dave and Phil Alvin notably of the iconic roots rock and roll band The Blasters) for a 26-date tour starting Wednesday, September 16 in Denver, CO and concluding Saturday, November 21 in Santa Barbara, CA. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets for all upcoming shows. See below for full list of tour dates.
“The band X, Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin are Southern California icons and some of our favorite musicians in the world–we are thrilled to be sharing the stage with them,” says Drennen. “For most of the tour Cindy and I will be performing as a duo with the exception of the California dates where we will be playing with the full band. Come to the show; we will give you our hearts!”
The duo partnered with POPMATTERS.com (7/31) to premiere the video for“The Price of Love,” the latest track from their recently released album IT’S EVERLY TIME!–the group’s 13-song tribute to the great Everly Brothers via Angel Flight Recording Co. (July 17); watch it now here. The video for lead single “I Use To Love You” premiered on LA Times “Pop & Hiss” blog (6/2) and can be viewed here.
IT’S EVERLY TIME! was recorded live with a band–DJ Bonebrake (drums),Dave Gleason (acoustic rhythm guitar), Elliott Easton (lead electric guitar), multi-instrumentalists Phil Parliapiano and David J. Carpenter–as well as special guests: The Section Quartet, guitarist Dave Alvin and bassist Rob Wasserman (Cindy’s brother). The live magic was captured at Linett’s Your Place or Mine Recordingand East West Studios in the very rooms where theEverlys and Beach Boys once worked (and are still equipped with microphones said to have been used by Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley). Here is a sample of the praise for DEAD ROCK WEST and IT’S EVERLY TIME!:
“At their performance Thursday night at Hotel Café on the eve of the album’s release, Drennen and Wasserman sang by turns with joyful abandon, bittersweet beauty and transcendent sadness, the kind that acts as catharsis for the pain of love lost or love unrequited…Drennen and Wasserman bent notes in tandem, musically summoning a flawless union, the kind the song’s lyric [‘(Why Am I) Chained to a Memory’] laments when it self-destructs. It’s a theme they came back to in the indescribably aching heartbreak ballad ‘So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)’…with powerful backing from a muscular four-piece band, Wasserman and Drennen tapped an insistent groove similar to that which Robert Plant and Alison Krauss conjured up on their 2007 version of ‘Gone, Gone, Gone.’ Toward the end, they also introduced an original song, ‘More Love,’ that fit stylistically and emotionally alongside the vintage Everly songs.”
–Randy Lewis, LATIMES.COM,July 17, 2015
“…they offer a treasure of harmonic delights. Wasserman and Drennen’s chemistry seeps into one’s consciousness…The result is a live-session vibe like there used to be when giants like The Wrecking Crew ruled the roost.”
–Eric Harabadian, MUSIC CONNECTION, August 6, 2015
“…It’s Everly Time!, a collection that tweaks the [Everly] brothers’ material via marvelous male-female harmonizing.”
–Stuart Monroe, BOSTON GLOBE, July 29, 2015
“Cindy Wasserman and Frank Lee Drennen’s harmonies complement one another in similar glimmer-and-shine fashion to the Everlys, while producer Mark Linett and ace players capture the sonic warmth and crispness of the original recordings.”
–Bliss Bowen, PASADENAWEEKLY.COM, July 9, 2015
“The Los Angeles duo Dead Rock West – Frank Drennen and Cindy Wasserman – have fallen in love with the Everly Brothers sound, and once you hear It’s Everly Time! you will, too…there are familiar hits: an austerely beautiful ‘Let It Be Me,’ a vibrant ‘Cathy’s Clown’ and a hushed ‘So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad).’ All are wonderful, but it’s the lesser gems that really make this album a keeper. The duo doesn’t shy away from the Everlys’ mid-1960s rocking sides, turning in a raucous ‘Gone Gone Gone’ and, in perhaps the album’s best track, a shimmering ‘I Used to Love You…’ other standouts include the hauntingly lovely ballads ‘(Why Am I) Chained to a Memory’ and ‘It’s All Over…’ no one could tackle such a project without both a serious commitment to this incredible music and the serious vocal skills to pull it off, and Drennen and Wasserman have both. Though they’re not trying to be dead ringers for the Everlys, their voices blend together just as effortlessly, and the entire album is a joy.”
–Sam Gnerre, DAILYBULLETIN.COM, July 21, 2015
“Their new release, It’s Everly Time!…is a lovely homage to a time and a duo that forever changed music.”
–Kelly McCartney, THE BLUEGRASSSITUATION.COM, July 6, 2015
“…a passionate and painstakingly researched tribute to the Everly Brothers.”
–Adrian Peel, DIGITALJOURNAL.COM, May 29, 2015
