COMPLETE VIDEO FOR SECOND SINGLE ‘INNOCENT’
FROM THE GOLD-CERTIFIED ‘SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN’;
GROUP TO MAKE ‘TONIGHT SHOW’ DEBUT ON JANUARY 29
Platinum-selling rockers FUEL–currently gearing up for the January 17th start of a tour with Kid Rock–have recently put the finishing touches on the video for “Innocent,” the second single from the band’s gold-certified Epic release SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN, their second album. “Innocent” explores the naivetò of being young and unaware of the harsh realities of the real world. The single is the follow-up to the band’s smash-hit “Hemorrhage (In My Hands),” which is still #1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart after 12 weeks. Additionally, the band–singer/guitarist BRETT SCALLIONS, guitarist CARL BELL, bassist JEFF ABERCROMBIE and drummer KEVIN MILLER–will make their debut on NBC-TV’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” Monday, January 29, when they perform “Hemorrhage (In My Hands).”
FUEL will world premiere the “Innocent” video January 25 on MTV2 with the clip playing every hour on the hour for the entire day. They will be the first band to debut a video on MTV2 since the channel’s recent re-launch on January 1. MTV will begin airing the clip January 26.
As songwriter BELL explains, “Innocent” almost didn’t make it onto SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN. He put aside the demo for the song and didn’t initially present it to the band. “I had about five or six demos that I was really excited to be playing for Kevin. I started playing them for him and he was like, ‘Yeah, that’s OK.’ I played him another and he had the same reaction,” BELL reveals. “So the last song I had was ‘Innocent,’ and he said, “That’s totally a hit man.’ It was a song destined for my junk heap and Kevin basically brought it back to life.”
BELL feels the lyrical content of “Innocent” (“Never did we know/What the future would hold/Or that we’d be bought and sold/When we were innocent”) is based on something to which everyone can relate. “You’re young, you’re in high school, you’re carefree, you’re innocent. Everybody’s telling you, ‘You’ve gotta know what you’re going to do with your life, you’ve gotta get ready for the real world,’ but when you’re 16 that kind of stuff just doesn’t register,” explains BELL. “Then all of the sudden you get out and see the ugliness of the real world and the way things really are. That’s a struggle some people aren’t ready for. Remember when you were 16 and needed a date for the prom or it was going to be the end of the world? Now you look back on it and it seems so trite and trivial, but at that time it means everything. That’s what I was getting at.”
The video for “Innocent” was shot recently in Los Angeles by Nigel Dick (who previously lensed the clip for “Hemorrhage (In My Hands)”) and features the band performing the song in a stark warehouse interspersed with pictures of tragic prodigies including James Dean, Jimi Hendrix and River Phoenix.
“A lot of the song,” BELL continues, “is based on not realizing what’s coming up in your life and not anticipating how things are going to be when you get there.”
