SOLD-OUT NYC SHOW BUILDS ANTICIPATION FOR THE FORTHCOMING RELEASE OF ‘SUPERNATURE’
“Walk out into velvet
Nothing more to say
You’re my favourite moment
You’re my Saturday
Cos you’re my number one
I’m like a dog to get you”
–“Number 1” by GOLDFRAPP (Alison Goldfrapp/Will Gregory)
As the buzz continues to build for the March 7 North American release of GOLDFRAPP’s third album SUPERNATURE (Mute)–already hailed as “the best pop album of 2005” by NME in England where it entered the chart at #2 and quickly attained gold status–the U.K.’s hottest act descended on New York City December 5th with a sold-out show at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. By turns dark, sexy and moody, GOLDFRAPP raised the temperature for the 2,000-plus fans packed into the Nokia with a set consisting of material from their three albums as well as their recently released Number 1 EP, featuring "Number 1/Ooh La La,” which hit #1 on Billboard’s "Hot Dance Singles Sales" chart.
Writing in the New York Times in his 12/7/05 review of their one and only appearance in America in 2005, Jon Pareles noted, "The desire in Goldfrapp's songs isn't blissful. It's uncertain, tinged with sorrow and desperation; sometimes the crisp pop structures melt into sustained, plaintive interludes…That moodiness is what sets Goldfrapp apart from other skilled electropop acts."
Capturing the excitement inside the Nokia, online outlet The Big Takeover observed, “When the lights went down, the place erupted in screams as a deep, pulsing synth enveloped the room. Then lead siren ALISON GOLDFRAPP emerged from backstage in a slinky black catsuit to join her bandmates for ‘Train.’ Soon after, two girls slunk onstage wearing silver bikinis and werewolf masks (yes, werewolf masks), and executed perfectly choreographed dance moves.” Songs like “Ooh La La,” “Number 1” and “Ride A White Horse” as well as old ‘Frapp hits “Black Cherry” and “Strict Machine” reverberated throughout the theatre.
Before GOLDFRAPP performed this much-anticipated show, praise came via previews in both Time Out New York and the Village Voice. And although John Waters was unable to be on hand, the film director sent a note to the band that read: "Thanks for the very cool Goldfrapp CD. I've been a fan from the beginning."
"Supernature unites the coolly precise electronic programming of Black Cherry with the melodic sumptuousness of Felt Mountain , revealing what might have been obscured by Goldfrapp's playful sexuality: the fact that she has world-class pipes, too."
Mike Wolf, TIME OUT NEW YORK , 12/7/05 (show preview)
"…a sound so smooth it's like silk for the ears. If Goldfrapp were a character in a movie, they'd be Sharon Stone's bisexual killer-bitch, wielding a wicked grin and an ice pick."
Tricia Romano, VILLAGE VOICE, 12/1/05 (show preview)
Stay tuned for more news about GOLDFRAPP, who will tour America in 2006 armed with their pioneering electronics, crystalline vocals, visual theatrics and dark-sex decadence. They recently dazzled audiences throughout Europe with headlining shows and as the special guest stars on the Coldplay arena tour.
