GREEN DAY'S 'WARNING' ENTERS BILLBOARD'S
ALBUM CHART IN THE TOP FIVE
AS "MINORITY" LOGS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WEEK AT #1;
MTV TO BROADCAST
"GREEN DAY LIVE WITHOUT WARNING" CONCERT SPECIAL
FROM SEATTLE'S AUBURN DRIVE-IN THEATRE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14 AT 10:00 PM ET/PT
As GREEN DAY's "Minority" continues its reign at #1 on Billboard's "Modern Rock Tracks" chart for the fourth straight week, the band's sixth album WARNING strongly debuted on Billboard's "Top 200 Albums" chart at #4 with first week sales exceeding 155,000 copies.
The band–BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG (vocals, guitars), MIKE DIRNT (bass, vocals) and TRE COOL (drums)-recently concluded a two-week promo tour of the U.S. which included stops in New York City, Boston, Atlanta and Seattle. To get things started, GREEN DAY gave TV viewers a taste of the new album on an MTV "First Listen" special September 29. Next on the itinerary: the band was interviewed as part of the "World Premiere" radio broadcast of WARNING on the SFX Radio Network live from Indianapolis on September 30, followed by a "Modern Rock Live" interview October 1 from their gig at the WNNX/"Big Day Out" festival in Atlanta.
After a day off, GREEN DAY jetted to New York City to bring their own brand of chaos to the Late Show With David Letterman and the Howard Stern Show on October 3. The next day, they stopped off at MTV's "TRL," followed that night with an explosive performance at New York City's Roseland in front of a capacity crowd of over 3200 WXRK contest winners, as well as an Internet audience worldwide via Entertaindom, who broadcast the show live on their website. This location was chosen after New York City officials turned down GREEN DAY's request to perform a free concert in Central Park or the Brooklyn Bridge. "I guess our reputation precedes us," said MIKE DIRNT on MTV's "TRL."
In a New York Post review of the Roseland show, Dan Aquilante noted: "What makes Green Day's concert craft so appealing, besides the music, is how the band destroys the invisible wall between themselves and the fans…all the new songs have very distinct personalities. Song peaks of those new tunes include 'Blood, Sex & Booze' and the title track to 'Warning,' both played late in the set, as well as 'Jackass' and 'Minority.' "
>From there, GREEN DAY set their sights on Boston. October 5 found the guys starting their day with an early-morning performance at WBCN. Towards the end of their three-song set, drummer TRE COOL injured his hand on one of his cymbals. TRE was rushed to a nearby hospital to get three stitches in his hand before heading back to join up with BILLIE and MIKE at a WBCN-sponsored in-store at Newbury Comics, where the band performed and signed autographs for all 2,000 fans in attendance. The next day, GREEN DAY performed a show for a capacity crowd of WAAF contest winners at Axis. All this with stitches intact.
Heading across the country, GREEN DAY performed and were interviewed in Los Angeles for a "Live Breakfast With GREEN DAY" October 9 on KROQ's "Kevin & Bean" morning show at Capitol Records' historic recording studio. The band were seen performing later that night on USA Network's Farmclub.com. To wrap up the trek, they headed to Seattle on October 10 for a concert at the Auburn Drive-In Theatre, which was taped for MTV. The special, dubbed "GREEN DAY Live Without Warning," will premiere Saturday, October 14 at 10:00 PM ET/PT.
In further touring news, GREEN DAY will be heading to Europe for a two week headlining tour starting November 27 in Lisbon, Portugal and concluding December 11 in Dublin, Ireland. Fans can expect to see GREEN DAY hit the U.S. concert trail in early 2001. Check out WWW.GREENDAY.COM for all the latest GREEN DAY happenings.
