What Canada’s HAWKSLEY WORKMAN sounds like on record versus what he sounds like live is like apples and oranges. The things that tie them together are his impressionable voice, remarkable songwriting and charismatic guitar playing. This fall, he’ll come to California for a string of one-man show dates at Hotel Café in Hollywood, CA, October 7, 21 and November 4 and Hotel Utah in San Francisco, CA, October 6, 13 and 27.
Hawksley Workman is a bit of a tough artist to categorize, with his recordings being diverse in style. His shows tend to be 'whatever he feels like' kind of events playing solo, converting a smattering of songs on his records to energetic guitar/vocal performances, a more cabaret-type experience with clever banter, a focus on his wide vocal range and strong songwriting. His live show has taken him throughout Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan, where Hawksley has made devoted fans, but America has been somewhat of an untapped territory. “I've had so many wonderful experiences recording and working in California, not to mention highly revitalizing spiritual sojourns to the desert.”
Delivered from the mythic Muskoka wilderness, Hawksley arrived on the Canadian music scene nearly a decade ago with a fearlessness rooted in an undeniable vocal panache. This Juno Award-winning wild card has already cemented his place as an emblem of Canadian culture with an impressive catalogue that includes 12 albums, highlights of which he’ll perform at his ‘Hotel’ shows. Hawksley is also making available for fans a free download of “Snow Angel” (The Paranomasiac Remix) via his website www.hawksleyworkman.com.
Hawksley’s albums encompass pop tunes, country jangles, anthemic rockers, hip-hop dance beats and gut-wrenching ballads, proving that he can do it all. Ten years after its debut, For Him and the Girls, Hawksley’s first record which was released in the U.S. last November, still stands as one of the groundbreaking albums of a new indie aesthetic that still reigns in Canada today. His catalog includes these albums—Lover/Fighter, The Delicious Wolves, Treeful of Starling, Between the Beautifuls, Los Manlicious and the one-of-a-kind Christmas disc Almost a Full Moon—plus his most recent offerings Meat (a wintry retreat to hometown Huntsville, ONT that is a raw take on the end of a relationship) and Milk (a pop/rock work influenced by his co-writing with Doc McKinney (Esthero, Res), Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Swedish super drummer/producer Marten Tromm).
Beyond his work as a recording artist, Hawksley has had a hand in shaping the next generation of Canada’s favorite albums, producing Polaris Short List and Juno-nominated works by artists such as Hey Rosetta, Sarah Slean, Serena Ryder, Tegan and Sara, Great Big Sea and most recently Justin Rutledge. Hawksley’s unquenchable thirst for collaboration also drives many songwriting partnerships with the likes of Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard to icon Jane Birken to French legend Johnny Hallyday.
