As of today, Sound Of The Police, the new album by pioneering turntablist CUT CHEMIST, is available streaming in its entirety exclusively at KCRW.com as part of their Album Preview series. This will be the first opportunity to hear the album in full before it is released on July 27. Comprised of two 20-minute mixes, Sound of the Police is driven by his passion for Ethiopian, Colombian, Sudanese and Afro-Brazilian sounds.
KCRW Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic Jason Bentley is already taken with the new live mix album, which Cut Chemist, aka Lucas McFadden, created live using only one turntable, a mixer, a loop pedal and all original vinyl pressings. “Cut has always been one of the most innovative figures in the DJ world and his skills are on full display on this album,” said Bentley.
Adds Derek Beres of the Huffington Post (7/15/10), “Cut, who helped found Left Coast groups Ozomatli and Jurassic Five, has always had a penchant for innovation. For this show, he brought only one turntable along with his mixer, loop pedal, and vinyl. The result is this African and Brazilian influenced rendering of classic tracks given a seriously beat heavy treatment. Two twenty-minute mixes comprise Sound of the Police, itself a head nod to Ethiopian military marches. Cut's cadence proves poignant under Peter King's ‘Ajo’ and Mahmoun Ahmed's ‘Bèmen Sèbèb Letlash.’ His pumping of low end along with the new loops offers these classic songs the bounce of modern production–throw in a few bboy breaks for good measure. The project is a brilliant attempt of reinterpretation that the man pulls off elegantly."
KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) has supported LA based DJ/producer Cut Chemist in his solo project work as well as the various projects he’s been a part of, including Ozomatli and Jurassic Five. The Album Preview offers a chance to hear new album releases in their entirety each week. Every Monday, at least one new titled is featured and available on demand for at least two weeks.
