Leading into the summer of 2010, KNITTING FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT celebrates 11 Tony Award nominations as one of the co-producers of the Broadway hit show FELA! The multi-faceted company, helmed by CEO/President Mr. Morgan Margolis–along with Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, Ruth & Stephen Hendel, Roy Gabay, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Edward Tyler Nahem, Slava Smolokowski, Chip Meyrelles/Ken Greiner, Douglas G. Smith, Steve Semlitz/Cathy Glaser, Daryl Roth/True Love Productions and Susan Dietz/Mort Swinsky–produced the play that was nominated in such categories as Best Musical, Best Performance By A Leading Actor in a Musical as well as Best Actress, Best Scenic Design, Costume and Lighting, among others. The winners will be announced at the Tony Awards ceremony in New York City June 13. Look for FELA! to embark on a national U.S. and international tour in the fall of 2011, in addition to the previously announced special engagement at London’s National Theatre in November of 2010
In addition to Knitting Factory music venues in Brooklyn, NY; Reno; Boise; and Spokane–where music enthusiasts can catch a variety of live performances nightly–the company also boasts a successful touring division with Knitting Factory Presents. Ranked within the top 15 U.S. promoters in the country last year by Pollstar, it is the exclusive promoter of 1000-capacity venues the Warsaw Theatre in Brooklyn, NY and the Wilma Theatre in Missoula, MT, as well as for numerous one-off shows and tours around the country.
Knitting Factory Presents is also entering its third year of producing the Outlaw Field Summer Concert Series at the Botanical Gardens in Boise, ID with this year’s schedule including Jewel & Brandi Carlile (June 21), Widespread Panic with JJ Grey (July 3), Kirk and Onomatopeia (July 22), Jackson Browne (August 2), Chris Isaak (August 11) and Willie Nelson (September 7). In New York City, Knitting Factory Presents is the exclusive music booker for the Ohm condominium building in midtown, bringing music acts monthly into the building for concerts.
In other news, Knitting Factory Records is in the midst of releasing the entire Fela Kuti catalog with 23 of his albums having been issued this year so far. Other offerings from the label include the original Broadway cast recording of the aforementioned Tony-nominated FELA! and Bonjour, the eighth studio album from French-Algerian singer Rachid Taha due out June 8. Look for announcements soon regarding other upcoming releases from Knitting Factory Records and its label partner Partisan Records (Deer Tick, Dolorean, Holy Sons, JBM, Mountain Man, Paleo, The Standard) in the second half of 2010 and first quarter of 2011.
Knitting Factory Entertainment also houses High Adventure Management, an artist management division that focuses on established and emerging artists. Current clients include Jack Littman and Nikki Lang, both of whom will soon embark on a short tour with Atlantic Records recording artist Robert Francis. Together, the trio will perform at The State Room in Salt Lake City June 5, the Knitting Factory venues in Boise June 7, Spokane June 8 and Reno June 11, as well as Connie’s Lounge in Sandpoint, ID June 9.
