“We’re excited about this album…We didn’t try to overthink it. It’s just down and dirty. It’s aggressive Korn screaming again.”
–Jonathan Davis, MTV.com, 8/6/03
“This is the real Korn, the real deal, as raw as it can get. It’ll make you want to drive your car off a cliff…But don’t do that! Or, buy our record first…Without having some stranger staring over our shoulder in the (studio) room with us, everybody felt more comfortable…this time, we have a million ideas in the bag.”
–Fieldy, Arizona Republic, 6/29/03
“It’s going back to our roots…More riff-based heavier rock, straightforward, less layered.”
–David Silveria, MTV.com, 8/6/03
Brash, committed and ultra-heavy, KORN return November 18 with TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (Epic), the band’s sixth–and first self-produced–album. Recorded at JONATHAN DAVIS’ Elementree Studios, the disc will be launched at radio in early October with the new single “Right Now.”
“Right Now” follows the album’s “Did My Time” single that appeared in the film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life. The band teamed with actress Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) for the “Did My Time” video.
TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR is “the best stuff we’ve ever done,” DAVIS says. “It sounds brutal and very heavy. I’m very happy with it because we didn’t have anybody telling us what to do, which is how we started out. It’s totally come full circle. Untouchables [the band’s 2002 album, featuring the Grammy-winning ‘Here To Stay’ for Best Metal Performance] was brilliant for what it was, but this album is an evolution and a mixture of everything we’ve done.”
For TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR, the band worked in a unique fashion. After initially laying down tracks with his bandmates–guitarists MUNKY and HEAD, bassist FIELDY and drummer DAVID SILVERIA–DAVIS headed out on the road across America in a tour bus with no particular place to go. It was there he came up with an array of lyrics and melodies. “I can really open up and look inside myself when I get out of my home element–being on the road helps,” said DAVIS upon returning from the trip. More work on TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR was done on a mobile studio inside JONATHAN’s bus during this past summer’s Ozzfest dates where the group delivered outstanding performances.
Reviewing their August 19 performance at the PNC Bank Center in Holmdel, NJ, Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times (8/21/03) wrote: “The day's only great musical performance came from Korn, the headlining act in Mr. Osbourne's absence…they spent more than an hour playing brutal songs full of adventurous instrumental parts and sweeping choruses."
KORN have sold over 20 million albums worldwide and have received widespread critical acclaim for their music. The band has redefined the parameters of heavy music, revolutionizing the genre by matching unsettling guitar textures and volcanic rhythms with jagged, introspective lyrics and intense vocal stylings. Stay tuned for news of KORN’s return to the road following the release of TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
