Singer, songwriter, composer and violinist LILI HAYDN partners with ARTISTDIRECT.COM to premiere the foot-stomping bohemian-style video for “My My Cross The Line” today (12/3). The video was directed by award-winning film director Henry Barrial and shot completely using the 8mm app on an iPhone 5 in Venice, CA where HAYDN lives. Watch here: http://tiny.cc/gr5aqx.
LILI HAYDN wrote “My My Cross The Line” with acclaimed singer/songwriter Marvin Etzioni and David Essex along with musician Itai Disraeli. HAYDN says, “’My My Cross the Line’ was written right after I evacuated my house, and was just starting to feel like I was getting my life back after losing everything in a freak chemical accident. I felt free, finally having fun making music in the studio again, staying up all night grooving and hypnotizing myself with a blend of circus chimes and funky bass…I think of it like if Tom Waits were in a Tim Burton movie about a violin playing jungle girl.” “Speaking of jungle girl,” adds LILI, “I was raised with almost no pop culture, and didn’t realize when I wrote this song that the chorus was almost the exact same melody as David Essex’s ‘Rock On.’ By the time I was alerted to this fact, the song was too far along to change, so I reached out to Essex to split the song!”
The song is off LILILAND, HAYDN’s full-length album which was released September 16 via MRI/RED. The disc was produced by the Los Angeles-based artist herself and mixed by Darrell Thorp (Radiohead and Beck), with drum work spearheaded by Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Lana Del Rey and Tori Amos). The 12-track album is a blend of quirky pop hooks, soulful melody, and raw grooves. It’s all unified by her unique brand of violin virtuosity, nakedly honest vocals and poignant lyrics that reflect her passion for social justice and personal soul-searching. LILILAND is available via iTunes and Amazon here: http://tiny.cc/3cewpx
The album features “Sea of Gold” which has been featured on Nic Harcourt‘s nationally syndicated radio program “Connections” and added to several non-commercial and college radio stations around the country. There is also a uniquely arranged rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic “Kashmir” as tribute to the legendary band. Watch the recently released music video for “Kashmir” here. HAYDN performed the song live in 1995 with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at The Forum in Los Angeles and subsequently opened for them on their last U.S. tour.
Upcoming LILI HAYDN performances include: Thursday, December 4 in New York, NY performing at the Ginetta Sagan awards for Amnesty International and Sunday, December 14 in North Hollywood, CA at Federal Bar as part of KCRW’s Gary Calamar’s Mimosa music series. LILI will also be performing Saturday, December 20 as part of KPFK 90.7 FM’s Holiday Concert & Benefit Show at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, CA.
