On the heels of the release of their new album WORLD WAR III, the Chicago-based alternative rock group MADINA LAKE have announced they’ll join the first-ever “Wake-Up! Tour” supporting Me Talk Pretty this fall. The nationwide U.S. tour will kick off November 26 in Baltimore, MD and will wrap up December 18 in New York City (see full dates below), Hell Or Highwater and New Years Day will round out the bill.
Early acclaim is starting to appear for the group’s third album WORLD WAR III. Alternative Press magazine noted, “…they’ve delivered their strongest album to date. World War III is a big, dirty pop record drenched in electronics, shot through with ass-shaking grooves and boasting towering refrains designed to be sung by thousands of voices. While ‘Howdy Neighbor!’ and ‘Fireworks’ are mean through and through, ‘Across 5 Oceans’ and ‘Heroine’ dramatically counter their insidious verses with soaring, uplifting choruses that sneak up out of nowhere.” (October 2011). Check out more critical soundbites listed below and listen to WORLD WAR III–just released September 13 on Razor & Tie–in full via MySpace: www.myspace.com/madinalake.
In video news, the group premiered the clip for their propulsive second single “Imagineer”—co-written and produced by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins–on PureVolume. Watch the video for MADINA LAKE’s, “Imagineer” below:

“In the wake of the beating bassist Matthew Leone suffered last year, Madina Lake’s return to the scene is reason enough to celebrate, it’s just icing on the cake they’ve delivered their strongest album to date. World War III is a big, dirty pop record drenched in electronics, shot through with ass-shaking grooves and boasting towering refrains designed to be sung by thousands of voices. While ‘Howdy Neighbor!’ and ‘Fireworks’ are mean through and through, ‘Across 5 Oceans’ and ‘Heroine’ dramatically counter their insidious verses with soaring, uplifting choruses that sneak up out of nowhere.”
–Dan Slessor, Alternative Press (October 2011)
“The album flat-out delivers consistently, from the bubbling bass and danceable beat of electro-pop leaning ‘Heroine’ to the snarling, itchy riffs and bitter angst of ‘Blood Red Fangs’ which uncovers an affair, ‘Honestly, honesty is for liars//And truthfully, the truth never needs explaining’.”
–Chad Grishcow, IGN (September 16, 2011)
“After an unjust break in their momentum (following the assault and subsequent recovery of bassist Matthew Leone last year), the sheer punch ‘World War III’ packs reaffirms Madina Lake as frontrunners in the scene. It’s noticeably darker than 09s ‘Attics To Eden’, but they’ve strategically kept their arrangements succinct and tight to keep their signature catchiness. There’s a polish in the production that does brush off the grit and edge from songs like ‘They’re Coming For Me’ and ‘Howdy Neighbor!’ but there is also something about the album’s slick sound that makes it an admirable push past adversity into a long-overdue bright future.”
–Amy Bangs, RockSound U.K. (September 2011)
“Madina Lake have done their best album so far with World War III, this is not a dark album with the title and the recent happenings in mind. It´s a very positive album with hope and a bright uplifting sound. …stunning modern rock anthems like ‘Across 5 Oceans’ and ‘We Got This’ sound like killer hits. The 2nd track ‘Imagineer’ is also another highlight that I return to all the time, what a superb album!”
–Kaj Roth, Melodic.net (September 2011)
“’Howdy Neighbor!’ is suitably energetic, all feistiness and gusto and disembodied backing vocals. It’s a heavier pop song laced with venom, and it uses a piano to add an uncharacteristic air of grace near the end. ‘Imagineer’ co authored and produced by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, fades in on a lengthy synth note, then adds heavy guitars and distortion for a rousing verse. The vocals are as snide as the album opener, breathing bitterness and resolution into the lyrics, and the pace remains electric right through.”
–Grace Duffy, Under The Gun Review (September 19, 2011)
“The drummer lays a solid foundation while using select parts in songs like ‘Howdy Neighbor!’ and ‘Across 5 Oceans’ to show off his exceptional skill. The listener has the insanely likeable vocals from Nathan Leone throughout the entire release. On tracks like ‘They’re Coming For Me’ his voice is brilliant yet seems so familiar and from the high days of rock music.”
–Ryan Williford, Audio Opinions, September 14 (10/10 CD review)
“Madina Lake’s three-album trilogy culminates with their epic release World War III. The album was inspired by real-life tragedy in which bassist Matthew Leone found himself in a coma after intervening in a domestic dispute. With the help of doctors and the music community the Chicago quartet prevailed and channeled their angst and energy into a 12-track melodic pop rock album full of uplifting and hopeful undertones. Stand out tracks include, ‘They’re Coming For Me,’ ‘We Got This,’ and ‘Hey Superstar’.”
