ON SALTED MUSIC
MIGUEL MIGS stands at the forefront of electronic music's soulful realm. Whether tackling his original productions or remixes, he achieves an organic sound by combining the best of both the electronic music and live instrumentation worlds. On his long-awaited album THOSE THINGS –due out March 20 (Salted Music)–MIGS realizes his talent beyond studio technique as a proper songwriter, vocalist, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, percussion and keyboards) with something new for his fans.
“Those Things” represents an open-minded spectrum that can have multi-meaning and definition,” states the San Francisco-based producer about his follow-up to his 2002 debut Colorful You (Astralwerks/Naked Music). “It’s electronic music inspired by old soul, funk, reggae and hip-hop incorporating lots of live elements.” These elements include the trumpet, congas, saxophone, guitar, bass and, of course, a diverse array of guest vocalists throughout. These include Sadat X from Brand Nubian, Lisa Shaw, Tim Fuller, Fred Ross from Sly and the Family Stone and Junior Reid.
“So Far,” the album’s first single due out February 6th, showcases MIGUEL MIGS’ quality production and songwriting skills with a stripped down and laid back classic soul sound infused with warm strings, acoustic guitars, live bass and a catchy vocal hook that will have you singing along. The song features the lovely vocals of L.T. (a.k.a. Aya, vocalist for Sweetback), recognized from Blue 6 hits “Sweeter Love” and “Love Yourself,” as well as Big Muff's “My Funny Valentine.” Remixes by Rasmus Faber, Eric and Josh Heath will be burning up dance floors very soon.
Other highlights on the album include: “Make Things Happen” and the title track, both featuring longtime collaborator Lisa Shaw; “Shake It Up” with guest Sadat X of Brand Nubian infamy; and—a first for MIGS–“Fire,” a reggae-inspired track helmed by the legendary “One Blood” Black Uhuru frontman Junior Reid. “With Junior, my friend was playing bass in his band and hooked me up with him when they were on tour coming through San Francisco. I was excited and honored to be able to work with him as I have been a fan since I was 11 years old,” says MIGS.
In support of Those Things, MIGUEL MIGS is planning a live band to take out on tour with a few vocalists including Lisa Shaw, L.T. and Tim Fuller among others to perform a selection of new and older material. Details will be announced in the next two weeks. Meanwhile, MIGS is confirmed for North American DJ dates: February 3 at Pawn Shop in Miami, February 10 at his Salted night at club Mighty in San Francisco, February 11 at Deep at Vanguard in Los Angeles, February 17 at Belo in San Diego, February 18 at The Whiskey in Calgary and February 23 at Next Door in Honolulu.
MIGUEL MIGS has been producing electronic music since 1998. While signed to Naked Music, he spearheaded the development of a new brand of West Coast house music signature with the label through numerous singles and EP’s he created under his own name and his Petalpusher moniker. In 2004, MIGS started his own label, Salted Music. Having been associated with an extensive number of labels throughout his career, he came to realize a desire to have his own base, a vehicle for building his own catalog of quality material. As a remixer, he’s worked with major label artists such as Macy Gray, Lionel Richie and Britney Spears. Additionally, he has released numerous mix CD compilations on labels including Defected, Naked Music, Southport Weekender and NRK. MIGS can be found regularly traveling the globe as one of the industries top-leading DJs.
