OZMA TO RELEASE ‘SPENDING TIME ON THE BORDERLINE’
MAY 6 ON KUNG FU RECORDS
BAND ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR WITH SUPERDRAG
OZMA will release their new album SPENDING TIME ON THE BORDERLINE, May 6 on Kung Fu Records. The band’s first single “Bad Dogs” solidifies OZMA as the ambassadors of modern power-pop. In advance of the single’s arrival to radio April 22, the Pasadena, CA quintet OZMA will head out March 26th for a west coast co-headlining tour with Superdrag.
Working for the first time with producer Chris Fudurich (Nada Surf, Matthew Sweet), OZMA incorporates a small orchestra and horn section, piano collaborations with Shmedley the bassist for the Sub Pop band Arlo, vocalist Rachel Haden and a marching band by Gerardo Berdin on SPENDING TIME ON THE BORDERLINE. It marks a distinguished new direction for the group.
Since forming in 1995, meeting through high school and the Internet, OZMA–DANIEL BRUMMEL (vocals, bass), PATRICK EDWARDS (drums), JOSE GALVEZ (guitar, vocals), RYEN SLEGR (vocals, guitar) and STAR WICK(keyboards, flute)–have rapidly matured their sound. OZMA’S first demo was recorded with Rod Cervera (Weezer, The Rentals), paving the way for their 1999 debut album Rock and Roll Part Three. The disc caught the attention of Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo who invited the band to open two nationwide tours in 2001 and 2002. After their debut sold 4,000 copies independently, OZMA officially signed to Kung Fu Records. In June 2002, the band released The Doubble Donkey Discon Kung Fu Records, a double EP project which showcased the band’s diverse influences and imagination.
In late 2002, after tours with Weezer, treks of Japan, countless headlining club shows and a mainstage slot for the length of the 2002 Vans Warped Tour, OZMA confined themselves to a live-in studio in Venice, CA. They emerged withSPENDING TIME ON THE BORDERLINE, a lush departure mixing pure indie power pop-rock with orchestral touches. Standout tracks include the alt-country jangle of “Come Home Andrea,” the love song “Utsukushii Shibuya,” and the politically animated “Turtleneck Coverup.” The SPENDING TIME ON THE BORDERLINE CD will include bonus footage with a small documentary about translating “Utsukushii Shibuya” in Japanese and MP3’s of the translated version plus a bonus acoustic version of another new song.
In other tour news, beyond the upcoming dates with Superdrag, OZMA are planning a headlining spring trek in late April.
