CELEBRATES HIS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE AT LOLLAPALOOZA 2009
REVERED MUSIC ICON
TO PERFORM WITH JANE’S ADDICTION AND DELIVER A SOLO LIVE ELECTRO SET AT “PERRY’S,” THE EXPANDED ELECTRONIC MUSIC-FOCUSED AREA
FARRELL’s bold concepts and influential affiliations—from Jane’s Addiction to his electronic musical journeys and collaborations with artists such as Thievery Corporation and Infected Mushroom to his soon-to-be-released material with Kaskade, Danja, and Swedish House Mafia–have cemented his status as one of music’s true revolutionaries. Last year, PERRY wrote and recorded the song "Go All the Way” for the hugely successful Twilight soundtrack. He was asked to write a song for a pivotal scene in the film, and came up with the emotionally galvanizing "Go All the Way,” a dance/rock/alternative track produced by Atticus Ross (NIN) and mixed by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, U2). With these landmarks, PERRY is getting that much closer to achieving his ambitious goal of balancing a multitude of aspects in his career. Stay tuned for more news about Perry’s solo music—he’ll be releasing an album in the not-too-distant future.
Jane’s Addiction is coming off their tremendously successful and acclaimed U.S. “NINJA” tour with Nine Inch Nails and their own shows throughout Europe. These concerts have marked the first time that Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins have performed together since their final show in 1991 at Lollapalooza. Undoubtedly, Jane’s Addiction’s performance at this year’s Lollapalooza will merge the band’s sonic fireworks with the deep emotional resonance of this homecoming.
"I looked out at the massive audience last year [at Lollapalooza] and imagined communicating with them,” says PERRY. “I dreamt of performing with the original Jane's Addiction team. Wanting us to pick up where we left off at the first Lolla (this year is Lolla #18). An evening with Jane's was always intimate, even at 70 thousand-plus. We spent this past year honing our show; building an outdoor music experience that will again unleash the Lollapalooza spirit. The conjure of Sex, Glory, and Pageantry.”
Close to FARRELL’s heart at the festival is “Perry’s”—the club-style area in the middle of the festival which launched last year as a place where people can experience live sets from an amazing line-up of live electro-bands and DJs. Now upgraded to the max, the area has been expanded to accommodate 10,000 people and will feature state-of-the-art sound system and high-end LED screens.
As always, PERRY values artistic growth. “People often ask me if the feeling of festivals has changed over the years. I tell them that first-time experiences are hard to top, but in following the evolution of music performance, I find constant inspiration. As Lollapalooza turns 18 this August, I have been most inspired by the collision of electronics and live instrumentalists. In '09 we have created a new scene. There will be an ‘in the round’ D.J tower with L.E.D screens, and protruding performance platforms have been built to accommodate the latest inspirations of the dance culture. With my dance partner of 11 years, Etty Lau Farrell, we'll be performing a ‘Live electro’ set alongside some the world’s best producers and live P.A. manipulators. A larger portion of land (10,000 capacity, just north of Buckingham Fountain) has been designated to accommodate the growing throngs of dance enthusiasts.
“There are a few things we never got on my long Lollapalooza wish list,” says PERRY with a laugh. “A hot air balloon, a helicopter… Well this year, damn it–I am getting my helicopter.”

About Perry Farrell:
Perry Farrell is one of the most influential and original musical figures in recent history. Dubbed as the "Godfather of Alternative Rock,” Farrell fronted Jane's Addiction in the early 80's. Creating a new genre and musical movement, Farrell and Jane's Addiction changed the music scene and paved the way for bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and STP to follow. In 1993, Perry created Porno for Pyros, a daring evolution to his diversity and growth. As well as being a groundbreaking musician, Farrell is the creator and founder of Lollapalooza. Launched in 1991, Spin magazine listed Lollapalooza as the #1 tour that changed the world. Known for its musical diversity, Lollapalooza was instrumental in exposing alternative music formats to the masses and establishing a sense of commonality across a fragmented demographic. The first of its kind, Lollapalooza quickly established itself as a lifestyle festival, pushing the envelope and exposing concert goers to a subculture of 'alternative' living and art, and provided a platform for numerous environmental and human-rights causes as well. As a constant creative force, Farrell continues to push his own artistic horizon as a music producer, DJ, visual artist, as well as a rock icon.
