ROBERT MILES & TRILOK GURTU
ROBERT MILES & TRILOK GURTU COLLABORATE ON NEW ALBUM; ‘MILES_GURTU’ SET FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 10 ON SHAKTI RECORDS
MILES_GURTU, the new collaboration album from ROBERT MILES & TRILOK GURTU, is a dark, left-of-center, down-tempo, masterfully edited electronic album enhanced by an assortment of unexpected contributors. Joining these two revered musicians on the album–due out February 10 on Shakti Records–are Jon Thorne of Lamb, Mike Patto, Nitin Sawhney, Paul Falloon, The Urban Soul Orchestra and Toshinori Kondo.
Robert Miles (nee Roberto Concina)–studio wiz of international renown, pan-continental leftfield DJ, eclectic radio producer and undisputed progenitor of electric Dream Music–and Trilok Gurtu, the maverick Indian music master, percussionist’s percussionist and collaborator to many artists including Mahavishnu’s John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Salif Keita and Oumou Sangare, blow away in the first 20 seconds any thoughts of another ‘Anglo flavors meets Asian beats’ workout.
This is a thoroughly musical affair recorded in Robert Miles’ London studio this past fall in which the protagonists (principally Miles on keys, sound design and production; Gurtu on drums and percussion, Thorne on double bass and Patto on Rhodes and Minimoog keyboards) interact and communicate on a musical stage that none of them could envisage or inhabit alone.
“We (both) come from very different backgrounds but love to experiment,” says Robert Miles, “and this has been the main drive while producing the album. A lot of improvisation, then manipulating the best of each take in a more twisted electronic environment. A long process of editing, arrangement and sound design. The huge amount of nights spent to ‘sculpt’ the various elements is now only a memory…”
