SAN FRANCISCO’S
THE STONE FOXES TO RELEASE|
‘BEARS & BULLS’
IN-STORES JULY 6
iTUNES EXCLUSIVE RELEASE SET FOR JUNE 29
NEW MUSIC INTRODUCED WITH FIRST SINGLE “STOMP”
From now until the release of Bears & Bulls, THE STONE FOXES will make available every Monday one song from the record for fans to hear. They launched last week with “I Killed Robert Johnson.” “Stories of Robert Johnson have been invented, fabricated, and hyperbolized and no one will ever be able to tell the truth from fiction. In many ways, his truth is fiction,” says Avi Vinocur who wrote the song’s lyrics. “These days, we have too much documentation to allow a person like that to exist. In the age of digital photos, Facebook, birth certificates, and laws and regulations, there could never be another Robert Johnson. The lonesome cowboy, the traveling troubadour, the man with no past: these are all people we will never get to meet. Bob Dylan almost succeeded, but failed. I liked the idea that someone living knew the real story of his death, so I tried to give a voice to that character. I suppose that murderer, like Robert Johnson, is one of those mysterious people lost in the past."
Hailing from the Sunset district of San Francisco, THE STONE FOXES don’t have a set lineup on instruments. Each song on Bears & Bulls is unique and who plays what changes depending on the song’s personality. Shannon Koehler may come out from behind the drums to sing and play harmonica, while Avi Vinocur replaces him. Aaron Mort, Spence Koehler and Avi regularly swap rhythm, lead and bass duties, and every member sings lead on at least a few songs. But it’s no gimmick. Like everything THE STONE FOXES do, the instrument and vocal changes are a function of the natural evolution of their music and what works best on each song.
"Stomp,” says Shannon Koehler about Bears & Bulls launch song, “…is meant to be a primal expression of how we all use and abuse our planet. We tried to get to the root of our music by staying natural. No electronics–just vocals, wood and metal. Each member of the band sings lead on a different verse about a different facet of our environment- plants, earth, sky, and animals-so that on the opening track of the record, each member is represented." Equally as engaging is “Stomp”’s video. Available in 3-D and non-3-D, the visual is a throwback to a cross-country adventure with the band to all of America’s legendary hotspots (Mt. Rushmore, Mardi Gras, interstate truck stops) as seen through a 1970’s viewfinder. View the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WONH1YuHGOE.
