SOPHIE B. HAWKINS
TO JOIN CHRIS ISAAK FOR JULY
CONCERT DATES;
“WALKING ON THIN ICE” SINGLE CLIMBS INTO TOP 30
ON A/C CHART
Chris Isaak has invited singer, songwriter and musician SOPHIE B. HAWKINS to join him on part of his U.S. tour this summer. Beginning July 9 in Philadelphia and going through July 30 in Denver, SOPHIE will perform hits (the Top 5 “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” from her Grammy-nominated TONGUES AND TAILS and the #1 R&R AC/Adult Top 40 hit “As I Lay Me Down” from WHALER), alongside songs from her latest release, the critically acclaimedWILDERNESS which includes the Top 30 A/C track “Walking On Thin Ice,” described by Rollingstone.com (4/7) as “a dreamy charm…”
Because SOPHIE is doing it all on her own this time, the victory of having a successful song is sweeter. “It’s harder now to achieve success because I don’t have the corporate machine behind me, but I do have the will and the passion which makes climbing the charts even sweeter.” SOPHIE independently recorded, conceived and planned the release of the album, which she co-produced with production wizards Christian and Frank Berman (Amber, Baha Men, Real McCoy).
Since the album’s release in late April, the critics have chimed in with their support:
“Sophie B. Hawkins lightens up on ‘Wilderness’ (Trumpet Swan/Lightyear), with a sound and aura evocative of Laura Nyro and Nina Simone.”
–Jonathan Takiff, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/20/2004
“Her best moments come when her fanciful pop orchestrations offer plenty of compensation, as on the evocative ‘Surfer Girl,’ or when her lyrics sound so effortlessly offhand they could pass for something composed by Paul Simon. Consider the final verse to ‘Blue,’ for example: ‘Dropping your dirty laundry off once a week/The delivery boys compete/But you never let them past the stoop/’Cause you know that you’re the neighborhood scoop.’”
–Mike Joyce, WASHINGTON POST, 4/30/2004
“Sophie B. Hawkins can always be counted on to create music that plays against the prevailing cultural forces. Her new CD Wilderness is all love, light and playfulness-and it’s a pleasure listening to it.”
–Kim McNabb, CHICAGO FREE PRESS, 5/5/2004
“Delightfully unorthodox yet keenly melodic, WILDERNESS finds Hawkins once again making her own distinctive mark on the musical landscape.”
–Dave Gil de Rubio, BARNES & NOBLE.COM, 4/20/2004
“…dozen-song set about love and heartbreak…”
–Sandra Barrera, LA DAILY NEWS, 4/16/2004
