LONDON TRIO SET TO RELEASE ‘WITH THE TIDES’
SEPTEMBER 23 ON KINETIC RECORDS
SOUTH—the London-based trio of JOEL CADBURY (lead vocals, bass and guitar), JAMIE McDONALD (main guitarist, vocals and drums) and BRETT SHAW (drums)–will release their second album, WITH THE TIDES, September 23 on Kinetic Records. Produced by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers/Idlewild/Ash) and engineered by Moke guitarist Sean Genockey, WITH THE TIDES is a collection of 12 beautiful songs comprised of not only big-picture melodies, but also little details with each unique and unorthodox instrumental flourish providing another brick in South’s already dense, impressively towering wall of sound.
From the live string arrangements on the Spectorian album opener “Motiveless Crime” to the whimsical banjo and harpsichord on “Loosen Your Hold” and lilting harp on “Nine Lives,” from what the band describe as “a mad, strange combination of a Nick Drake-y folk thing with Motown drums” on “Straight Lines To Bad Lands” to the head-spinning array of atmospheric guitar effects throughout, it’s apparent that WITH THE TIDES is not the work of some rudimentary guitar/bass/drums outfit.
SOUTH’s debut album From Here On In was released on MoWax/Kinetic Records to high critical acclaim. As noted in Interview (2/02), “South is…gorgeous, body-thumping atmospheric rock n’ roll. It’s delicate without being soppy, noisy without being ugly, and sexy enough to reset your compass”
WITH THE TIDES is a straightforward and streamlined affair, the result of SOUTH’s immeasurable growth via nonstop touring. The trio crisscrossed continents for both solo shows and tours with the bands Cornelius and Elbow. “This album is about a band spending three years on the road–doing three tours of America, a tour of Japan, and shows all over Europe–and taking that energy back to the studio,” explains founding band member Brett Shaw.
Most recently, SOUTH made their first-ever appearances at the prestigious, annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Southern California April 26 and Glastonbury in the U.K. June 28. The band will be touring the U.S. this fall.
