STROKE 9 continue their reign of radio airwaves with this week’s release of their second single “Letters,” the follow-up to their Top 5 modern rock hit “Little Black Backpack.” Radio success, powered by the band’s dedication to touring, have pushed sales of their Cherry/Universal Records debut album Nasty Little Thoughts to imminent gold status. “Letters” is #1 most added in its first week out at modern rock radio with over 40 stations already on board, including KROQ (Los Angeles), Live 105 (San Francisco), Q101 (Chicago), WFNX (Boston) and 99X (Atlanta).
A potent and catchy guitar pop song, “Letters” is “about fear of commitment and the inevitability of break-up,” says singer and songwriter LUKE ESTERKYN. “This song took shape one morning at my friend’s house…she would leave early for work every morning, and I would sleep in and be alone in her apartment…she had a little stack of letters that she kept on her dresser, and I was always tempted to read them…”
Meanwhile, in between dates on their current major college tour, STROKE 9—LUKE ESTERKYN (vocals, guitars), JOHN MCDERMOTT (guitars, vocals), GREG GUELDNER (bass) and ERIC STOCK (drums)–are taking time off to perform at two special events in their hometown of San Francisco. On April 8, the group will be appearing at the Tower Records California Music Awards as a performer, and will also be present as a nominee. They’ll also be sharing the stage with Chris Isaak a few days later on April 11 at the opening-day celebration of the city’s new major league baseball park, Pacific Bell Park. This free concert will take place at Pier 33 after the San Francisco Giants’ game with an expected 40,000 people in attendance.
