“Prioritizing collective rhythm over individual solo-ing, STS9’s futuristic cocktail of rock, jazz, funk, psychadelia defies classification and manifests in a live music experience that will captivate you with beautiful intensity and melody. STS9 pulls it all off with help from their intentional energy and vibe, staggering stage production and hopeful message for the future.”
Following their multiple-night takeovers in Los Angeles, Austin and Chicago already this year, acclaimed and adventurous electronic rock band STS9 announced today (2/7) the dates for their spring “Get Loud Tour,” named for the lead single off their latest full-length album, THE UNIVERSE INSIDE. The quintet will bring their expansive sound, innovative style combining the energy of 21st century dance music with the dynamics of a band, one-of-a-kind critically acclaimed production and message of unity to audiences across the country this April, with support acts to be announced.
The band’s 23-date headlining trek officially kicks off with the previously announced doubleheader at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas March 31 and April 1. From there, STS9—Hunter Brown (guitar/sequences), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), David Phipps (keyboards/synths), Zach Velmer (drums) and Alana Rocklin (bass)–will perform multiple nights in Park City (April 3-4) and Lake Tahoe (April 6-7) and then stop in San Diego, Tulsa, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas and Houston, among other cities, before wrapping in New Orleans with two shows (April 29-30), one of which will be their acclaimed acoustic Axe The Cables show. Pre-sale tickets will be available beginning Wednesday, February 8 with the general on-sale commencing Monday, February 13 at 10am local time. STS9 released their latest album THE UNIVERSE INSIDE to critical praise September 2, 2016 via the band’s own 1320 Records, marking their first new full-length album in nearly seven years. The 13-track album–the band’s first featuring bassist Alana Rocklin–debuted at #1 on the iTunes and Amazon Electronic Albums Charts and #2 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart, marking their highest position to date on that chart. THE UNIVERSE INSIDE features lead single “Get Loud,” a collaboration with singer/songwriter Betty Idol and acclaimed production team the J.U.S.T.I.CE. League, and opens with “Supercluster,” which samples the original NASA STS-9 radio transmission and represents the band’s return from a journey that began with their 1998 debut, Interplanetary Escape Vehicle.
Written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band at their own 1320 Mission Control in Santa Cruz, CA, THE UNIVERSE INSIDE continues the band’s stylistic exploration in the studio, with Ben Kaye from Consequence Of Sound saying, “The Universe Inside sees the band return with a message…in all, the record marks a new dawn for the long-standing outfit” (8/26/16) and Jambands.com‘s John Patrick Gatta noting, “With the creation of The Universe Inside the quintet may have put out its most important album – artistically and conceptually. Among the spacey atmospherics and danceable rhythms are lyrics and recorded content that reminds us of our interconnectivity, particularly at a time when the world needs a message of unity not division” (12/19/16). Fox Adams from Sound & Silence Magazine added, “it contains 13 tracks of celestial sounds and goose bump inducing riffs that will take you on a journey back to the band’s funk roots” (8/30/16) and Greg Schwartz from PopMatters.com called it, “an energetic disc with a fresh distillation of their ongoing effort to create infectious grooves with a spiritually uplifting vibration” (12/15/16). Kyle Rutherford of The Untz also praised the album saying, “The Universe Inside is a conscious expression of the beauty in the world, and a motivation for all listeners to follow the path they wish to choose” (9/5/16) with Grateful Web‘s Elliot Engebretson describing it as, “a melodical masterpiece with a message, one that speaks of space, time and this cosmic universe we are all a part of” (10/20/16).
Here’s what the critics had to say about STS9’s recent live shows:
“[STS9’s] mind-expanding live sets and jam-electronica blend has put them on the vanguard of that musical movement.”
“STS9 transformed the Fillmore Detroit into a cosmic dance party with its otherworldly sounds…STS9 displayed group rhythmic cohesion over melodic soloing, an approach that separates it from many of its peers.”
“Do yourself a favor, if you just want to let yourself go, dance and forget everything else except for the here and now, get out and see STS9 the next time they come through your town.”
“[Their] sets were pure bliss as the band fired on all cylinders.”
“One of the best light shows in the business.”
“This intergalactic planetary, mind-bending, core-shaking band just keeps getting better every year; every show; every day. The music they create not only inspires, but radiates this metaphysical energy that has the ability to awaken and transform your soul. Tribe is so progressive and dynamic that, no matter how many times you’ve seen them live, you always get something new and profound out of every show; and you always want more. There are literally no limitations to what this transcendent quintet can accomplish.”
“With the growing popularity of electronic music in contemporary culture, STS9 carries on the torch, combining influences both new and old into a sound so unique, it’s a retro-futurists wet dream.”
“STS9 has the power to elevate sensations of happiness and fulfillment. This group brings instrumental electronic rock music to the next level – incorporating a bit of jazz, funk, hip hop, drum and some badass bass. Fans were truly astounded at the immense rhythm that filled the atmosphere…Not to mention the light show was fantastic, which ultimately brought a sense of cosmic waves shooting through the air and lifted everyone’s spirits.”
“STS9 is largely unmatched in the jamtronica scene, and they deserve it. Very few have been able to carve such an identifiable niche in both jam and electronic music culture. Their vision is as interesting as it is inspiring; and only instrumentalists as talented as these could truly bring it to life.”
“At The Fillmore [San Francisco], STS9 delivered one of the most stunning shows of the tour both on paper and on stage…There is no question STS9 is one of the most successful touring bands out there, and their careful attention to details are second to none.”
“To say they brought the house down would be an understatement. They didn’t bring it down, they raised it to a higher plane. This was one of those shows. You know, the ones that remind you that music is the universal language. That it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, when the groove hits your soul your body has to move. Sound Tribe Sector 9 doesn’t chat on stage, they don’t physically interact with the crowd, they play music. They play some of the best music you will ever hear. They are masters of the inescapable build…The crowd is brought to a frenzy, over and over again throughout the night. The transition from groove to peak is incredible. The band’s skill is breathtaking. Every number goes through a myriad of musical genres, soulful funk to bring the smiles, dirty rock to make you stomp, everyone complimented by the innovation, complexity of sound and driving rhythms of electronic music…A light show so colorfully intricate and well coordinated that I could have sworn I was seeing sound, perfected the evening in a way that will serve as a constant reminder of why I write about music.”
