To coincide with this exciting news, RollingStone.com today(9/26) exclusively debuted HOFFS’ new music video for “Picture Me” from SOMEDAY. As HOFFS told RollingStone.com, “The song ‘Picture Me’ is about love–the desire to know true love, and the way we wonder and worry if the love we feel for another is reciprocated, real, and lasting. I am fascinated by how the 20-something generation invented the phenomenon of social media as a way to communicate, connect, and share their lives and stories with friends through pictures.
“The concept for this video was to spend an afternoon with three real couples, all in their 20s, and document their interaction–including the way they attempt to capture fleeting moments shared with their partner in photographs which, to me, is both bittersweet and hopeful, like the tone of the song.” AOL’s Spinner.com exclusively premiered the “Picture Me” track 7/12 in advance of SOMEDAY’s long-awaited release.
SUSANNA has also launched a “Picture Me” Tumblr page at http://asyouronetruelove.tumblr.com/ and is asking her fans to share their own photographs depicting love, to be posted to the community wall. Beginning today (9/26) photos can be submitted directly viahttp://asyouronetruelove.tumblr.com/submit.
Meanwhile, the musician and founding member of The Bangles will kick off her solo tour Monday, October 29 with a show at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta.HOFFS and her band–guitarist/songwriting collaborator Andrew Brassell, bassist Derrick Anderson and drummer Jim Laspesa–will hit major markets including D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Chicago before continuing on to the west coast leg with shows in San Diego, her Los Angeles hometown, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. The full itinerary is below and ticket purchase info can be found at http://www.susannahoffs.com/tour.
Produced and orchestrated by the revered Mitchell Froom, SOMEDAY is an intensely personal song cycle that doubles as a musical love letter to the music of the 1960s, which “has always been my reference point for everything,” says HOFFS.
Beyond “Picture Me,” SOMEDAY also features “Raining,” which SUSANNA co-wrote with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as the summery groove of “This Is the Place” which is currently in rotation at Starbucks alongside “Picture Me.” The album has receivedoverwhelmingly positive reaction from the media (quotes below).
Here’s what has been said about SOMEDAY:
“…Hoffs sounds as girlish and vulnerable as ever. Small wonder you could imagine songs like ‘Always Enough’ or ‘Holding My Breath’ being covered by Lulu or Cilla Black back in the day. As studiously retro as such references may be, the album never feels like an intellectual exercise or an act of regression. The melodies have a faithful ache, and the arrangements a meticulous charm, that fully earns their sources’ beloved company.”
–Jim Farber, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, July 17, 2012
“The horns and string arrangements recall heroes like Burt Bacharach and Dusty Springfield without repeating them. Hoffs indulges her love for pure pop…”
–David Bauder, ASSOCIATED PRESS, July 16, 2012
“Sounding as if ‘Manic Monday’ was just yesterday, the Bangle picks the perfect season to return with an album that has ‘summer’ all over it. These sun-kissed, retro-‘60s songs show that she’s lost none of her girlish charm.”
–Chuck Arnold, PEOPLE, August 6, 2012
“Susanna Hoffs opens this album by channeling her inner George Harrison on the charming ‘November Sun,’ a catchy tune that’s as bright as it title implies, with a nursery-rhyme simplicity that instantly embeds it in your mind. The Beatles influence is also evident on ‘Picture Me,” a country/pop confection with ‘Strawberry Fields’-inspired horn fills, and ‘True,’ a ballad as sweet as a McCartney love song, with swooning strings set of by a clanging electric guitar.”
–J. Poet, MAGNET, Issue #89 Summer 2012
“It’s certainly a left-field surprise. Someday, the jangly, Mitchell Froom-produced solo set from Bangles bandleader Susanna Hoffs, sparkles with the classy ‘60s sound and delivery of Petula Clark or Dusty Springfeild.”
–Tom Lanham, MAGNET, Issue #90 Summer 2012
“…marks a long overdue return to her own pop music career with triumphant results…The honey-voiced songbird delivers a solid album with a feel-good vibe, which sounds authentic in its union of 1960s simplicity and 2012 sophistication (à la Dusty Springfield meets Adele)…The 10-track song cycle is a sentimental, but compelling musical billet-doux to sixties-style melodies and emotive lyrics. The picturesque prose and folk-like sound of the infectious ‘November Sun’ and the playful bounce of ‘One Day’ instantly reel you away and find you yearning for simpler times. Someday is the perfect soundtrack for a summertime rainy day that doesn’t overreach or become self-indulgent, but fulfills its goal of a delightfully enjoyable pop record…This is easily and undeniably Hoffs’ most definitive musical statement to date.”
–Eric Allen, AMERICAN SONGWRITER, August 6, 2012
“This all-original ten-track collection by this prolific songwriter confirms Hoffs’ ability to intertwine the baroque folk/pop style into ear-pleasing arrangements. Combined with her signature raspy vocals and the record’s vintage vibe, these songs transport the listener back to a (peaceful) place as Hoffs paints the vivid picture of ‘wishing you were kissin’ Valentino by a crystal blue Italian stream’…From the opening song, ‘November Sun,’ to the last beat of ‘True,’ this album brings the audience on a groovy journey through the eras of Hoff’s illustrious career.”
