WRAP UP N.Y.C. RUN AND SET SIGHTS ON
THEIR WANEE FESTIVAL IN FLORIDA APRIL 16-17
With their annual New York City residency having wrapped up last week (3/20), the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND now have their sights set on their annual Wanee Festival in Live Oak, FL, where the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will perform marathon sets both nights of the festival that they founded and curate.
Set in the bucolic Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL, the Wanee Festival–launched by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group in 2005–offers like-minded music fans the opportunity to see the Allman Brothers Band perform full-length sets (without curfew) as well as nearly 30 other acts including Widespread Panic, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Bob Weir-Rob Wasserman & Jay Lane Are Scaring The Children, Steven Stills, Black Keys, Dr. John, Hot Tuna, Dr. John and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (see full line-up below).
The Brothers’ Wanee shows are two of only six confirmed for the band for the remainder of 2010. The group–GREGG ALLMAN (vocals and keyboards), BUTCH TRUCKS (drums and tympani), JAIMOE (drums), WARREN HAYNES (vocals, lead and slide guitar), DEREK TRUCKS (slide and lead guitar), OTEIL BURBRIDGE (bass) and MARC QUINONES (congas and percussion)–is not touring as vigorously as usual in 2010 to allow band members time to focus on their various projects. The Allman Brothers Band’s other appearances include late April solo shows in Macon, GA (sold out) and Huntsville, AL as well as an April 25 performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (headlining the main stage at 5:00PM) and a June 26 appearance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival.
To accommodate fans who want to arrive early, Wanee organizers have expanded the Thursday, April 15 kick-off party as well as the "Wanee Wednesday Happy Hour" April 14 which features Crazy Fingers and Little Brown Peach. Set times are being revealed daily on www.waneefestival.com.
Critical acclaim from the group’s recent live performances at New York City’s United Palace included these two opening-night reviews:
“Thursday night, the band found an emotional high-point in ‘Desdemona.’ Its slower blues gait allowed singer Gregg Allman to lose his broad growl and center on the song’s emotional core.”
“…fans were enthralled with the Allmans’ trademark Southern rock with its jazzy improvisation—where even the simplest tune turned into an epic composition…Among the night’s most fiery moments came at the close of the first set while the men plowed through the instrumental ‘Kind of Bird,’ the most difficult and impressive tune of the night. Haynes composed it in homage to jazz legend Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, trying to capture Bird’s horn style on guitar. In concert, he and Trucks did just that, showing off some complex improvisations that were supercharged by the band’s three percussionists.”
