Brooklyn indie rockers THE AVIATION ORANGE are relatively new to the music scene but they have already caught the attention of well-respected, national indie tastemakers such as Under The Radar, Filter Magazine, The Deli, LP33 and MTV U’s The Freshman. They are poised to take it a step further in 2011 with EAST OF HERE, the new self-released EP out Tuesday, August 9.
Adept song writing, sonic experimentation and dueling male and female vocals combine to make this band stand out. In July 2009, THE AVIATION ORANGE released their debut self-titled album featuring the first single “Radio.” The corresponding concept video propelled the rockers onto a national platform premiering on MTV U's The Freshman. Following its broadcast, "Radio" climbed the charts on MTVMusic.com peaking at #8 and leading to a spot on the website's Top 100 All-Time Videos. The debut brought further attention from various media outlets. They became Filter Magazine's "Undiscovered Band of the Month" for July 2010, which praised THE AVIATION ORANGE for bringing “their own unique tone to the genre” and were chosen for a spot in the June 2010 music sampler for Under the Radar Magazine. They also garnered a “NYC Artist on the Rise” feature on The Deli NYC blog which noted “The Aviation Orange play alternative electro rock with a strong emotional element…The band brings danceable energy that…translate[s] into a fun live performance” (2/15/10) and this led to winning Deli Magazine's Artist of the Month for May 2010.
THE AVIATION ORANGE—Michael Nesci (Guitar, Vocals), Cherie Hannouche (Keys, Vocals), Alex Beninato (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Kate Rogers (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Josh Harris (Drums)–have come back strong with a six-song set reflecting the band’s collective life experiences. Each member contributed to the writing process for the new EP.
"Being in Brooklyn, surround by so many people working on so many different creative projects, you can feel kind of lost in a crowd,” shares Nesci. “Scenes and sounds rise and fall so quickly you don't know where you fit in or if you want to fit in. I think a lot of the songs on EAST OF HERE deal with that feeling."
Recorded at James Iha’s Manhattan studio Stratosphere Sound, bandmates Nesci and Beninato took helm of engineering and producing duties, bringing the band a renewed sense of focus and a matured sound.
Highlights include the opening track “Trammels”–a term referring to the blinders used in horse training. The song moves from opening atmospherics to a bouncy verse and back again. The infectious chorus finds Hannouche singing, “In a moment I will break/Before these knots will fray/But you know I won’t say no.” Another noteworthy track is the ethereal dancer “Ingenious Us,” of which Nesci says, “We kept things ambiguous, but we wanted to instill a feeling of adolescent apathy. When you're a kid you’re free from restraint, you believe you can do anything, you don't really care about the outside world–that's where the title came from and the idea to use children's voices on the refrain in the outro."
“Ingenious Us” has been selected for Under The Radar’s free music sampler, now available in Issue #36 (May 2011).
On the live front, fans will have a chance to catch the band at several Brooklyn-area shows including a performance as part of The L Magazine’s four-day Northside Festival and a free show Thursday, June 30 in Union Square as part of “Summer in the Square” hosted by alternative weekly New York Press. THE AVIATION ORANGE will also celebrate the release of EAST OF HERE with a show Friday, August 5 at Pianos in New York. The band will perform later this summer at a private event for Google headquarters. Complete tour dates listed below.
THE AVIATION ORANGE has performed at Cincinnati's MidPoint Music Festival (and will again this year), New York's own CMJ Music Marathon, and several showcases at the 2010 SXSW in Austin.
