THE HURLEY INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS:
SUB CITY TAKE ACTION TOUR
IS OFF TO A STRONG START
TOUR ANNOUNCES OPENING LINE-UP CHANGE AND SOLD-OUT SHOWS
The HURLEY INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS: SUB CITY TAKE ACTION TOUR is off to a strong start. The fifth annual tour features headlining act SUGARCULT with THE EARLY NOVEMBER, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS, ANBERLIN,HOPESFALL, MAXEEN, PLAIN WHITE T’s and MÊLÉE rounding out a rotating schedule through the 36-city run. HOPESFALL also replace HEAD AUTOMATICA–who were forced to pull-out due to illness–from February 3 through March 2. In order to fill the opening void, the PLAIN WHITE T’s will jump in the opening slot from March 3 through March 7 and MÊLÉE have signed on as openers from March 8 through March 12. The tour is currently blazing across the country with mostly sold-out shows. So far, the Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Los Angeles, Anaheim and New Jersey shows have all sold out in advance. In addition, during the first six shows Take Action organizers have already gathered over 4,000 petition signatures that will go to Congress requesting funding for a national suicide prevention strategy and implementing a mental-health parity in health insurance coverage for all Americans.
In other news, TAKE ACTION! artists and organizers gathered for a press conference on Capitol Hill last week (February 2) to kick off the nationwide tour and raise awareness for the federal funding of suicide prevention programs1. Present at the conference were TAKE ACTION! headliners SUGARCULT; tour founder LOUIS POSEN; U.S. House Representatives BART GORDON (D-TN), PATRICK KENNEDY (D-R.I.), GRACE NAPOLITANO (D-CA) and TOM OSBOURNE (R-NE); Youth America Hotline! (1-877-YOUTHLINE) and National Hopeline Network (1-800-SUICIDE) founder REESE BUTLER; and MICHAEL FAENZA, CEO of the National Mental Health Association moderated. During the conference, U.S. House Representative PATRICK KENNEDY offered a moving statement: “If you walk down the street and you see a man talking to himself, you’ll cross the street to avoid him. But if you saw that same person bleeding in the street, you’d stop right away to call 911. There’s a public stigma attached to mental health and people need to understand there is nothing to be ashamed about–that is what makes the Take Action tour so important.”

1The Capitol Hill Take Action! press conference asked Congress to fully appropriate the $82 million funding for the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act which passed September 9, 2004. The Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act was introduced by Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) in memory of his son who died by suicide. The bill will help establish critical support for mental and behavioral health services for students on college campuses. The bill acknowledges the significant toll that mental/behavioral health problems can take on a student’s ability to succeed in college. A majority of the funds authorized in the bill are dedicated to statewide Youth Suicide Early Intervention and Prevention Strategies.
