‘THE LAST DJ,’ LIVE: Johnny Depp (with actress/girlfriend Vanessa Paradis), Stevie Nicks, Adam Sandler and Jenna Elfman, as well as directors Paul Thomas Anderson and Taylor Hackford, were on hand at the two sold-out TOM PETTY and the HEARTBREAKERS shows at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles this week (Tuesday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 16). The band performed their newly released Top 10 album THE LAST DJ in its entirety–at this one-time-only event–with a 40-piece orchestra conducted by Jon Brion. The first night was transmitted live via satellite to movie theaters in 36 cities across America and to over 125 radio stations in the U.S. and Canada. In hisLos Angeles Times review (10/17/02), Richard Cromelin noted that “…Petty instills a real sense of betrayal into his narratives, making palpable the sense that something precious has indeed been lost,” while praising the group for how they “…moved from swirling folk-rock to arena-rock detonations with deceptive ease.” Writing in the Orange County Register (10/17/02), Ben Wener said The Last DJ “…is one of the group’s great achievements, including more than a few instant classics, ‘Have Love Will Travel’ topping the list.” TOM PETTY and the HEARTBREAKERS begin their major national fall tour Sunday, October 27.
