WITH MONUMENTAL SHOWS SCHEDULED TO HIGHLIGHT THE VENUE’S
RICH MUSICAL HISTORY
ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA DECEMBER 10-13
AND THE WAILERS ON NEW YEARS EVE
Los Angeles’ THE ROXY THEATRE first opened its doors in the late fall of 1973. 35 years later, the legendary venue marks this significant milestone as one of America’s longest-running independently owned and operated establishments with two monumental shows highlighting its rich musical history: Zappa Plays Zappa December 10, 11, 12 and 13 and a New Years Eve performance by The Wailers.
In December, the spirit of Frank Zappa—who along with the Mothers recorded numerous live tracks of Roxy & Elswhere in 1973 and 1974—returns to THE ROXY with a four-night run of Zappa Plays Zappa. Led by Frank’s son Dweezil Zappa, the band will perform various compositions the musical icon wrote from the 1960’s through the 1980’s.
THE ROXY’s anniversary celebrations will culminate with the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition–The Wailers–on New Year's Eve. At this show presented by Indie 103.1, they will perform in its entirety Exodus–the album TIME magazine called “Album of the Century” in 1999–among other hits. Bob Marley & The Wailers first appeared at THE ROXY in the spring of 1976 where they recorded the seminal live album, Live At The Roxy.
Today the venue is helmed by Nic Adler, son of legendary producer Lou Adler (Monterey International Pop Festival, The Rocky Horror Show, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers, The Mamas and The Papas, Spirit, Carole King, Cheech and Chong), who along with Elmer Valentine launched THE ROXY onto the forefront of the American musical landscape. It remains one of the most prominent independently owned venues in Los Angeles. The history of THE ROXY is paved with icons, whether it was pre-stardom shows from yet to be famous acts like David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse and the Pussycat Dolls, the setting for landmark “Live At The Roxy” recordings by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Brian Wilson and Social Distortion, or the designated party destination for John Lennon, John Belushi and any music-savvy celebrity today. Even up to now, with recent shows with Nas, Samantha Ronson and teen sensation Demi Lovato, THE ROXY’s patrons are always privy to the best in what is the best in music today. Three decades on, the club has also been a popular performance mecca for other entertainment including stage productions, comedy shows and performance art.
