Since self-releasing their new album BEARS & BULLS July 6, San Francisco’s THE STONE FOXES have some cool happenings in their world. Following a recent sell-out performance at San Francisco’s Café Du Nord at their record release show (7/17/10), THE STONE FOXES have been tapped by NPR’s World Café for their “Next” feature (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128390931), AOL’s SPINNER.COM is on track for a featured listening party of their album today, Monday, July 19 and the FOXES are positioned at #4 on FMQB’s SubModern Albums chart and #7 on the SubModern Singles chart with “Stomp.”
Meanwhile, THE STONE FOXES are on track to get back on the road this month with newly confirmed tour dates, including appearances at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, the BSSP Summer Fest in Sausalito and East Bay Express’ “Best Of The Bay” party in Northern California. Hailed as a “barnstorming blues-rock band” by Tom Lanham of the San Francisco Examiner (7/15/10), THE STONE FOXES don’t have a set lineup on instruments which they will emphasize at each of their gigs.
"Bears and Bulls, their latest release, rules…Catchy songs like ‘Young Man’ and ‘Patience’ will have you playin' air guitar in front of your mirror. Then they break it down to a very bluesy song ‘Easy,’ with so much emotion behind the arrangement and singing that it may provoke a tear."
–Tony DuShane, SFGate.com (6/13/10)
“’Young Man’ and ‘Hyde & Pine’ are both good examples of simply brilliant rockers, standout tracks. Both are the true essence of ‘ballsy.’ And ‘Hangman’ is great garage rock blues, with a damaging harp throughout. You can’t help but love it. And it hints at what made the White Stripes so popular. ‘Reno’ is another example of the good side of this album’s equation. With its scratchy guitar riff and kick-ass mentality and quirky lyrics. And, on a smaller note, it’s quite nice to finally hear a good song written about Reno, rather than its bigger brother, Las Vegas.”
–Pat Prince, Goldmine (6/8/10)
“Sunset District darlings the Stone Foxes affirm their devotion to blues-soaked monster rock on Bears & Bulls…The gutbucket six-string riffs and soulful shout-singing on tracks like ‘Stomp,’ ‘I Killed Robert Johnson’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’ show this band of twentysomethings has been pounding the old-time gospel — Stones, Zeppelin, Aerosmith — since kindergarten. In much the same way Jack White salvaged dinosaur guitar jams from the ashes of 1980s Arena Rawk excess, the Stone Foxes use these grooves to tell their own contemporary San Francisco stories.”
-Sam Pestrianni, SF WEEKLY (7/14/10)
“The four San Franciscans in The Stone Foxes have an energetic style that's rooted in swampy, foot-stomping blues-rock. Their freshly released sophomore album, Bears and Bulls, tackles ambitious arrangements with diverse moods ranging from acoustic twang to thunderous electric-guitar riffs. The band is best known for its live shows: Explosive and in constant flux, the sets find The Stone Foxes swapping instruments and lead vocal duties. They emphasize an immediate connection to fans and listeners; as such, the material on Bears and Bulls was worked out onstage and self-recorded with live instrumentation and very few overdubs.”
–NPR World Café: Next (7/5/10)
“…the Foxes bring a rawness and an unpretentious gang mentality (they swap instruments freely, and all four take turns at lead vocals) to their music that keeps it fresh.”
-Andy Hermann, Metromix (July 2010)
“This is a self-admitted "audio snapshot" of who The Stone Foxes are. And judging by the quality of their heavy bass grooves, original guitar riffs and gravelly vocals, The Stone Foxes seem like some pretty cool guys. ‘Stomp’ utilizes its namesake as a bluesy metronome, while ‘Easy’ features a country feel and acoustic sound. For fans of dirty blues and heavy bluegrass licks, check out this band…”
– Madison VanderMeer, Real Detroit Weekly (7/14/10)
"One wouldn't expect this NoCal quartet to outdo their self-titled debut but with Bears & Bulls they most assuredly have. Brimming with confidence, precision and enough scruff and git to make Mick Jagger smile, Bears and Bulls is a scuzzy, greasy, summer opus and just the kind of thing to keep this band on the national radar. If this doesn't turn some heads, what the fuck will?"
–Gregory Robson, AbsolutePunk.net (6/30/10)
“…if rock ‘n’ roll needs a savior…The Stone Foxes make one incredibly compelling case.”
– Bryden McGrath, The Daily (7/7/10)
