It’s time to gear up for the holidays, and ERASURE have come forth with music that’s perfect for this season’s soundtrack with their new album release SNOW GLOBE out now on Mute. SNOW GLOBE is a 13-song collection of original compositions (“Blood On The Snow,” “Loving Man”) and seasonal classics (“Silent Night,” “Silver Bells,” “Sleep Quietly”).
SNOW GLOBE’s current single “Gaudete”—ERASURE’s take on the traditional Latin carol, which will be recognizable by many after Steeleye Span’s version in the early 70’s—has been turning heads with its video. For the clip, the synth-pop icons VINCE CLARKE and ANDY BELL collaborated with Martin Meunier (James & The Giant Peach and Coraline) and Tonya Hurley, author of the best-selling ghostgirl and The Blessed series for the dark and beautiful stop-motion animation clip. It’s been garnering the attention from the likes of pop-culture driver Entertainment Tonight to horror destination Bloody Disgusting. Check it out here: http://vevo.ly/Aq9id7.
Unlike the bells and whistles, glitter and tinsel sets that crowd the market come Christmas-time, SNOW GLOBE is possessed of something more in the wistfully, strangely subdued celebratory mold of recent seasonal albums by Tracey Thorn and Kate Bush. Look for the next single and video “Make It Wonderful” to make its debut in early December.
Snow Globe in the press:
“Snow Globe features a handful of new Erasure songs, as well as seven holiday numbers from across the centuries, including sparkling, shimmering takes on ‘Silent Night,’ ‘White Christmas,’ ‘The Christmas Song,’ It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,’ ‘Bleak Midwinter’ and ‘Silver Bells.’”
– Brian Mansfield, USA TODAY, November 4, 2013
“The album contains new original songs with a seasonal twist, while also giving Erasure vocalist Andy Bell the highly fitting opportunity to croon Christmas classics like ‘Silent Night’ and ‘White Christmas’ with Clarke’s new, unusually stripped-down and eerie arrangements. For instance, first single ‘Gaudete’ is a dancefloor take on the traditional carol-and possibly the first song sung entirely in Latin to be remixed and serviced to clubs. Elsewhere, the track ‘Blood on the Snow’ starts with a staccato synth waltz, like ‘Carol of the Bells’ performed by an android orchestra from the future. Dark imagery of coal, ash and blood gives way to the hope of a bright guiding star and three humble gifts.”
– Evie Nagy, BILLBOARD, October 28, 2013
“…there is real beauty in Snow Globe’s melancholy, particularly the stirring ‘Gaudete’ and their stark cover of ‘Silent Night.’ This is a holiday album for those who like ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ way more than Frosty the Snowman.”
– Tracey Davenport, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, November 15, 2013
“Erasure’s new album, Snow Globe (Mute), is a weird mix of year-end treats. It’s a holiday album, of sorts, so it includes Andy Bell’s angelic delivery of classics like ‘The Christmas Song’ and ‘Silent Night’ over Vince Clarke’s inventively spare, bleepy-bloopy synth arrangements. There are also dark originals –‘Blood on the Snow’ and ‘In the Bleak Mid-Winter’– that bridge the gap between holiday songs and more expected Erasure numbers. There are also new dance anthems, including the groovy party-starter ‘Brooklyn’ and the sweetly retro ‘Loving Man’ that will be the stars of many a holiday party. Does it hold together? Does that really matter? It’s fun.”
–Glenn Gamboa, NEWSDAY, November 12, 2013
“I’ve always liked Erasure, but I don’t think until now I can honestly say I love Erasure. ‘Gaudete’ changes my feeling by being completely mad in a hundred different directions. First, it’s from their upcoming Christmas album, Snow Globe, …hearing them absolutely kill this traditional Latin carol. Then they teamed up with Martin Meunier, who worked on Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach to create a stop-motion gothic masterpiece of weird winter worship. Seriously, if church was more like this I’d start going. Erasure brought their freakin’ A-game on this one.”
–Jef Rouner, HOUSTON PRESS, November 6, 2013
“Old Christmas favorites like “Bleak Midwinter” …Bell and his cohort of over 20 years, Vince Clarke, do it justice with deep, rich vocals and a measured pace.”
– Katherine Flynn, CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND, November 13, 2013
