UNKLE AND IAN BROWN ANNOUNCE THE NOVEMBER 30 RELEASE OF THEIR COLLABORATION “REIGN” ON GLOBAL UNDERGROUND
UNKLE ALSO LENDS A REMIX HAND TO “THE INCREDIBLES”
“Despite the synth-generated settings and the many cameos, this is essentially a singer-songwriter album. “Safe in Mind,” which features Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, turns into a rocker, and “Panic Attack” is driven by strident beats and loops. Yet even that song is a ballad, which is the set’s dominant form…such standout tracks as “Reign” (sung by Stone Roses veteran Ian Brown) and File’s “What Are You to Me?” actually allow songcraft to rival atmospherics.”
— Mark Jenkins, WASHINGTON POST (October 29, 2004)
UNKLE (James Lavelle and Richard File) and Ian Brown have collaborated on the song “Reign,” the upcoming single from UNKLE’s new album Never, Never, Land out now on Global Underground. Brown, formerly of The Stone Roses, turns “Reign” into a heartfelt hymn against a backdrop of emotive strings, melancholy piano and bassist Mani’s (also formerly of the Stone Roses) dubwise hooks. Set for release November 30, “Reign” will be the follow up single to “Safe In Mind” featuring Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age. The “Reign” single package will encompass remixes from Morgan Geist, Evil 9, Way Out West, Anagram (Pablo from the Psychonauts), DJ Three, Beat Pharmacy and RJD2.
Ian Brown is no stranger to UNKLE, having appeared on their debut album Psyence Fiction with the Top 10 single “Be There.” “It’s nothing but a pleasure to work with James and Richard,” says Ian Brown. “We’ve guested at each others shows many times now. Some of my best work have been collaborations with UNKLE. Long may we Reign!”
The video for “Reign” was recently completed in London with UNKLE and Ian Brown. Directed by Australia’s Daniel Askill whose credits range from directorial work for major corporations MTV, Virgin, Warner Music, Universal, The Australian Ballet, Panasonic & Foxtel and fashion companies like Rochas and Ghost, as well as web site design for Alexander McQueen, the clip is highlighted by fire-blasts, explosions and stunning imagery of a male physical form.
“It’s hard to pin-point where the idea came from, but I guess it is based on the concept of a narrative built around a ritualized event, and in this case the elemental forces and the notion of invincibility seemed to sit perfectly with the track,” states Askill. “As with any project worth doing there is often a little pain involved in the process, in particular for our lead, Pschemko, who had to spend a day hanging upside down by his ankles in a glass tank, his head fully submerged in water. Not to mention shooting exploding glass and fireballs at the end of a very long day, right next door to London city airport.”

Each remixer took elements from Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles film and score, composed by Michael Giacchino, then reconstructed and re-created something totally new and exciting. Leading off the EP is the UNKLE RECONSTRUCTION remix, a guitar-based breakbeat track that hits hard and brings the fantastic world of The Incredibles to life.
