North America's longest-running touring festival kicked off the summer celebration on Friday, June 25 in Carson, CA at the Home Depot Center. Now in its 16th year, the VANS WARPED TOUR® brought in music lovers by the thousands and saw the largest crowd yet at the Mountain View, CA date (June 26).
On Friday in Carson, over 12,000 fans took in the sights and sounds of All-American Rejects, Street Sweeper Social Club, Alkaline Trio, Sum 41, Andrew W.K., Mike Posner, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Rocket Summer, The Pretty Reckless, Confide and many, many others. Saturday’s Mountain View show brought out a record 16,000 attendees and Ventura (June 27) on Sunday drew over 11,000.
Off to a stellar start, 2010 promises to be the most memorable jaunt yet for the annual punk rock extravaganza. The tour has its finger on the pulse of the hottest acts in diverse genres from punk and metal to rock, pop and hip-hop; a sampling of the artists on this year’s trek includes: AM Taxi, Anti-Flag, Artist Vs Poet, Attack Attack!, Beachers Madhouse, Bring Me The Horizon, Call The Cops, Closure in Moscow, Cobra Skulls, Dropkick Murphys, Everclear, Every Time I Die, Eyes Set To Kill, Face To Face, FEAR, Fake Problems, Fight Fair, Haste The Day, Hey Monday, Hot Chelle Rae, Jack Grisham and the West Coast Dukes, Manic Hispanic, Mike Posner, Motion City Soundtrack, NeverShoutNever, Of Mice and Men, Pennywise, Pierce The Veil, Polar Bear Club, Reel Big Fish, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Riverboat Gamblers, Set Your Goals, Suicide Silence, Sum 41, The Adolescents, The Bouncing Souls, The Cab, The Casualties, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Pretty Reckless, The Summer Set, VersaEmerge, Voodoo Glow Skulls, We The Kings, Whitechapel, You Me At Six and so many more. Visit http://www.vanswarpedtour.com/warpedtour/bands.asp for a full list of bands performing at each show.
Here’s some early praise from the opening weekend of the VANS WARPED TOUR:
“More than 90 bands erupted beneath an overcast sky, as new acts and established names like All-American Rejects and Andrew W.K. made for another intense sampling of hard rock, punk and hip-hop…hip-hop/rock duo 3OH!3 bounced to the main stage with a full band, igniting tough, tuneful riffs and raps to a big crowd of fans holding up the two-handed 3OH!3 salute…Andrew W.K. delivered 30 minutes of straight-ahead hard rock & roll…On another stage, Attack Attack mutated sludgy metal riffs with sudden shifts into bright pop melody, as band members bounced to the beats. The guttural death-metal roar of singer Caleb Shomo balanced with melodic, vulnerable vocals from guitarist Johnny Franck…Over on the ‘Legends Stage,’ a lesson in punk-rock history unfolded from the likes of the Adolescents, GBH and other loudfastrules veterans…The 40-minute Rejects set was a high-energy finish, as singer Tyson Ritter shouted and paced the stage like a twitchy rock & roll revivalist. On a break from writing for their next album, the band cranked the rock hooks up high.”
–Steve Appleford, ROLLING STONE.COM, June 28, 2010
“The Vans Warped Tour blew out 16 candles Friday, making it older than a good portion of the 12,000 fans who attended the opening date on the 42-city summer tour. The sun-splashed Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., was a sea of colorful Mohawks, tween screams, father-and-son moshers, F-bomb-laced T-shirts, and vendors hawking every imaginable article of punk gear. Oh, and you can bet your $5 pair of sunglasses there was music too.”
–Kevin Bronson, SPIN.COM, June 28, 2010
“After 16 years, most music festivals would be played out but the annual Vans Warped Tour has managed to simultaneously expand and refine itself while staying true to its punk roots.”
–Andrew Lentz, DRUM!, June 29, 2010
“Mom and Dad, the aggression was modest…there were no marijuana cigarettes seen floating around audiences, and security was tight, responsible and respectful, like one clean machine.”
–Colin Stutz, LA WEEKLY, 6/28/10
“If there was one thing the first day of Warped Tour 2010 proved, it was that the real action this year was to be found on the tour’s many side stages, with so many promising acts that have yet to break into the mainstream….Unlike past rosters that have been loaded with more heavy hitters, this year might have one up on those ones because he best bands are going to be new to most audiences, which is really the core of what this tour is all about.”
–Brien Overly, CAMPUS CIRCLE (Los Angeles), 6/30-7/13/10
“Now 16 years old, trumping most contemporary music festivals in terms of consecutive years running, the annual Vans Warped Tour might rightly be considered an old-school shindig. Yet the average age of Warped fans (more than half seem to be under 18) paired with often equally fledgling bands beckons a different description: trendy, hip … a scenester’s paradise, perhaps? Certainly, the festival boasted far fewer of the purists who birthed both punk and this annual tour itself during Friday’s kickoff at Carson’s Home Depot Center. But thousands of teens still got their jollies via headlining sets from power pop groups such as The Rocket Summer, Sum 41 and the All-American Rejects.”
–David Hall, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 6/26/10
“There were plenty of notable sets from such bands as Motion City Soundtrack, Alkaline Trio and others, but it was pretty clear that All American Rejects were the main draw Tuesday, taking the stage just a little before 7 p.m. to a thunderous reaction from easily the biggest audience at this year's show. Front man Tyson Ritter showed his charisma early on and easily won over the audience as the Rejects performed their hits ‘Swing, Swing,’ ‘Dirty Little Secret’ and ‘Gives You Hell’ much to the delight of the crowd.”
–Michael Escoto, ARIZONA REPUBLIC (Phoenix) June 30, 2010
“This 16-year-old festival, known to insiders as the ‘punk rock summer camp,’ is stronger than ever and rolling through the so-called downtrodden music industry without feeling financial repercussions….Indie artists, veterans and new comers performed with amazing exuberance, excitement, and pure adrenaline, which instigated the audience to unleash their inhibitions and enjoy this breezy summer day.”
–Michele McManmon, EXAMINER, 6/27/10
